I have a feeling it will stay open well. A lot of people go through that Kmart, especially on weekends, and lots of younger people going in after school.

Now, do I care if it stays open? Not one bit. Personally I'd love to see all the fast food on STX shipped back to the Continent, and our young people being taught the value of eating fresh and local and homemade and healthy. There are plenty of good options for restaurant (even quick service) healthy eating available too. But...I digress.

Thank you. (tu)

Sidebar:

People complain about food prices here, but typically they're looking at foods that had to take a boat ride to get here - and you bet that produce is awful after two weeks aboard ship. Go local St. Croix - there's a lot of really good options here to eat well, seasonally and healthfully.

I think too that there is a grassroots movement starting here for that type of tourism that could be a HUGE boon to the island if it takes off...like what Ridge2Reef (which we affectionately call the Hippie Farm) is doing...ecotourism, healthful eating, yoga and spiritual retreats, cleansing diets, etc etc etc...I know a lot of people in Austin who pay $1000s each for a week in Costa Rica for those experiences. It definitely could happen here on STX.

McDonald's in the USVI is owned by Arcos Dorados, a Latin American holding company and the world's largest franchisee.

I think Subway is locally owned, but I would need to check. I don't think Wendy's is locally owned either.

Out east, blue water has good pizza.
Divi is good too. But not locally owned... Unless the pizza place is separately held.

Blue Water's pizza is wonderful! They are closed right now (vacation), but it might be my favorite on island.

Wendy's is owned by a local holding company.

KFC and Pizza Hut are kinda sorta locally owned - by a holding company based in CA that has an office in St. Thomas.

iHop is owned by former senator Allie Allison Petrus.

Can't find anything on Subway, but they are usually mom and pop owners.

HOWEVER (soapbox rant) - my comment about shipping fast food back to the continent and eating "fresh and local" had little to do with who owns the restaurants, rather it's that the fast foods are overprocessed, not locally sourced, high in calories and full of dangerous chemicals, sugars, and fats - you all read the news. And unfortunately the food they sell is designed to be addictive, so that people eat more and more of it. I'd love to see kids taught in nutrition, home economics (i.e. preparing fresh foods), and supporting local farmers and agriculture. This is my soapbox, it's what I'm most active in. 🙂

ETA: This is a good article about "Real Food" at Subway...which is often sold as "healthy." http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2012/06/12/food-babe-investigates-is-subway-real-food/

I had a feeling that someone would mention those. 😀 The saltfish and conch is probably as close as you're gonna get.
