LIFEGUARD job needed

I am planning to relocate this January to either STT or STX. But ideally, I'd like to line up a job for when I get there. I know it's the high season now-- does anyone know of resorts / public beaches in need of a lifeguard (with 3 summers' experience)?

Chenay Bay is advertising for a watersports person. This person would probably sign out kayaks, sailboats, snorkel equipment. And be a presence on the beach. Don't know about STT, but I've never seen a lifeguard on STX.

The Magens Bay Authority on STT hires lifeguards and their telephone number is (340)777-6300.

Hello Allen,

You would think there would be a lot of lifeguards with all the beaches and resort pools. Never really thought about it, but I don't think any of the resorts have lifeguards. At least I haven't ever noticed any poolside or beachside. Perhaps the watersports booth attendant takes CPR & other basic rescue classes??? Actually I vaquely remember seeing someone at the Ritz Carlton Resort pool that may have been a lifeguard a few months back. Anyone else have feedback on lifeguards at resorts?

Magens Bay on St. Thomas and Trunk Bay on St. John (National Park) are the two beaches that come to mind that have lifeguards daily. I have seen a lifeguard at Brewers Bay (St. Thomas) on Sunday only (not sure if thats a volunteer job or a paid job; if it is paid I would guess its by the Dept. of Housing, Parks & Recreation).

wait, aren't you the guy who graduated from an "elite" law school? glad to hear that you are putting your legal education at work, Posner would be proud:)

as for your question, most of beaches here don't have lifeguards. because of the Open Shore Act, all beaches in VI must be accessible to the public, so resorts aren't burdened with that responsibility, and the government simply doesn't care.

it's the high season so you probably can find a waiter or boat crew job, but your plan of becoming a VI version of David Hasselhoff seems unlikely.

David Hasselhoff- that's nice! No, my idea was just to get the kind of job that doesn't defeat the purpose of moving to VI, and I happen to have lifeguarding experience. But I was actually thinking more about resorts' pools than their beaches.

Yes, I am the guy with the law degree, but I obviously don't have much inclination to use it just now. Another option I've considered is contributing to one of the local newspapers, etc. (Does anyone think this is feasible?) I DO have the inclination to write, creatively, but this takes time, and a committment to poverty for awhile. . .

Further questions (for anyone who's interested):
1)Are any newspapers hiring writers?
2)What else is available, lacking specific experience (I wouldn't mind being a bartender, for example)

Most likely, I am just going to show up and start talking to people. I imagine I'll find something. It doesn't have to be perfect. I'm not coming to VI for the job market.

Thanks to everyone for your help / advice.

Allen: The Virgin Islands Daily News seems to hire reporters, proof readers, etc. fairly often. There was a reporter who contributed to this board before during and even after his stay. The Source is an on-line paper, you could contact them also.

If you have enough money to keep yourself going for awhile, find something to do and show some staying power and work ethic, you will find many opportunities in areas that may have nothing to do with your original training. Great run-on sentence, huh?

I see that you have a sense of humor and can take a joke well, I like that.
PM me, I might just be able to point you to some legal job leads.
