Let's talk about Mosquitos
Hi everyone.
I read Pamela's comment that Mosquito spray will be the prefered Perfume, forever.
Are the infestations the same in all island or will any of them have less?
With thousands of tourist arriving from all parts of the world in the cruise ships, are any case of Dengue, Malaria or yellow fever know in the area?
Thanks
Homero
Good question,
I also would like to know this too..
(in my case its St. Thomas)
Dave
OK, maybe I go a little overboard on the subject of mosquitos. Even after ten years here, I am their meal of choice. I got dengue after hurricane marilyn and have been perhaps a bit on the over cautious side since then. We do have mosquitos after a rainy season but they are not swarming ALL THE TIME nor most of the time. A good can of bug spray and one of those tennis swatters is the most you need. If you want to get crazy, there are mosquito magnets you can buy for the yards and a smaller version for the house.
🙂
The feast on me as well, and I've had a particularly viscious round the last couple of weeks.
I came to learn that while I am inside, door oepn as it always is,and not on the beach, late in the afternoon - my bare feet and ankles start like...itch city.
I see one or two mosquitos and wonder gee, what is going on.
Early on in my habitation of St.Thomas, I had posted a question about this - now I really seem to have the answer - No Seeums!!!!!
It seems that they had decided to live on a bush or bushes just outside my front door. I discovered this when I happen to brush past the branches on my way down to the water...and the air was filled with this cloud of - well, hardly seeums! A Ha!
Off to Ace I went. Bug spray in hand and the weed wacker to trim away the branches. Issue outside resolved.
Inside - I am very happy to report that Benadryl Spray - Extra Strength Itch Relief sprayed on the welts that quickly appear - happily, happily, more than you can ever know, take away the sting and the itch.......like BIG TIME!!!!
It also nullifies a mosquito bite, but it is the no seeums that were doing me in. Perhaps now my arms, legs and feet will have a chance to heal up and I won't walk around looking like a fledgling leper or something!!!!!
Island living - rain yesterday....flying things next 48 hours!!!! Be ware - close the door - spray!
Paul,
I was trying not to scare them. But I do fondly remember the days when I thought Mosquito nets were romantic! HAH!
You guys are great 🙂 romantic mosquitos nets and flying things after the rain.
Paul the flying insects after the rain are termites, they are attracted to light so turn off the lights outside and use minimal light inside and they won't come inside the house and in the morning they are usually gone except for all the little wings all over the windows and ground.
Mosquitos exist here as well as other insects. They can be controlled though; keep doors closed in the late afternoon (dawn and dusk seem to be when they are more active) or get a screen door, make sure there are screen windows and screens in the sliding glass doors of your apartment or house, keep the grass short and kept, keep the trees and hedges maintained, don't leave stagnent water in empty buckets, pails, plants, pots ect outside, use a little bug spray around the windows and doors once in a while. Not a big deal, but they are here along with other insects (ants, roaches, termites ect. ) I wouldn't call their existance here an infestation; when it rains there are certainly more of them - public works used to spray in the evenings - not sure if they do this anymore, haven't seen the trucks in a while. All the Caribbean islands I have been to have had some mosquitos not sure if any have a worse problem then others but would imagine the wetter ones would.
Malaria and Yellow Fever, of course could happen but I have not heard of any breakouts except in historical accounts of the islands. Dengue - yes, as mentioned often after storms when there is a lot of stagnent water laying around for the mosquitos to multiply in and create an infestation.
The cold/flu season here seems to conincide with high tourist season.
