I've been reading this board for about two years- and what great information I have received from all. Definately from soup to nuts. I and my husband are coming from Florida to STX. We sold our place in June and have a lease until the end of this June. We registered with the Dept. of Labor, talked to several Realtors/Agents on our visits and great conversation with bartenders adn servers throughout our travels. We have tried to set ourselves up for success. We want to join the "island life". We're doing major downsizing which is a wakeup call to what's really important in life. I am taking early retirement from my job - as of March first-I'm retired. We will have from then until June 30th to get settled into a place and jobs. My husband is a diesel mechanic and I am in Food & Beverage Training. If anyone has suggestions or hears of jobs that sound like something of interest to us, please let me know. I plan to come in March to get PO. Box, small storage unit, look for a small place to live, start paperwork to have my vehicle shipped and meet some new friends over one of my new favorite drinks like the Cruzan Confusion or whatever. I've listened diligently to lists of "what to bring/not bring". We have subscription to the Avis which is great-they end bundle once a week-so we see the ads and goings on from the island. Thanks to everyone-keep up the great sharing of info in a great trivial pursuit which is major information to many of us. See you soon.

If your husband is a GOOD diesel engine mechanic, there is a serious need for that on STX. My fiance has multiple aircraft refueling trucks with diesel engines and finding a mechanic who can diagnose and repair problems has proven difficult beyond imagining. PM me with your husband's resume/training info and perhaps there will be a fit that could give him some business when he gets to the island.

He's considered a master mechanic, very good at diagnostics. One toolbox is 7' x 8', not like some mechanics with a fshing tackle box. I sent you a PM.

Thanks Judi! Got the resume and forwarded it on. Perhaps something will come of it. You just never know!

Hi Judi,

With regard to housing, which part of STX would you like to live on? East End, the west ("West Is Best!), center isle? Some friends of mine are currently renovating an incredible house that they bought, with dynamite views of Salt River and a 2-bedroom apt. I don't know when it will be done, but I think they are aiming for mid-2006.

It seems to me that the view was great everywhere around the island that I have seen. My husband favors the east side to see the sunrises. I like the Gallows Bay area. We haven't made and snap decision about that. We did have someone tell us that you are more likely to run out of water on the desert side. I have not seen the Salt River area yet. Welcoming more suggestions.

Judi- are you thinking about living in a house or a condo? If a condo is your preference, there are some specific locations where units are available for sale or for rent. If you prefer houses, you have more widespread options as far as location. If it would be of use to you, I can send you a narrative description of many of the condo complexes on STX that discusses things like sale price ranges, amenities, pet policies, # of bedrooms available, location, general condition, proximity to services, etc.

Houses and neighborhoods are far more diverse and complicated to describe in general terms. It is true that the eastern third or so of the island is dryer than the western part and you may have higher water bills as a result. If you prefer that part of the island, the water situation may be worth dealing with. The north shore and Salt River areas are very beautiful with rainforest and some good beaches. Some people like the serenity of being in a rural region rather than right in close town and some do not. The south shore is less populated, as is the west end, but these areas also have many beautiful beaches and water views, plus more rainforest north of F'sted. It's hard to go wrong with selecting a view no matter what part of the island you find you prefer.

We have recently looked at Condos here in Florida, just to get idea of how they work, normal amenities, offerings, etc. We've lived rural for the past 13 years and have stayed at Longford Hideaway each time we've visited STX. Since we downsized from having 2.5 acres to care for...my husband bought a Harley and spends his former "grass mowing time" riding. For us location will be more important than whether its a house or condo, etc. Walking distance [less than 2 miles] to the beach would be great.
