Howdy Folks,

Well after 2 weeks in paradise this December I'm taking the plunge. But I could use some advice from all you folks here.

I've pretty much decided to bring my vehicle and I'll cart in the 30 cu. ft. allowed by the shipper. That may seem like a lot but when you have tools, welding equipment, etc. it can be used up quick.

My question, what should I bring as opposed to buy there? I've already scuttled kitchen stuff (I am a bachelor), tv, speakers, furniture, bed etc. I'll be mailing a stereo, clothes, linens, 'puter stuff, odds and ends from home.

What should I mail or ship that I won't be able to get on island easily or cheaply?

Where's the best place to get furniture once I'm down there? I know there's that new furniture shop (Rooms to go?) has anyone tried it? What kind of furniture works best (settlers handbook says avoid certain things, what do you recommend)?

And where should I shop for a tv, speakers, etc. once I'm there?

I'll be on island by the end of January, lots to do here in Austin before I leave. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

TejasTom

I used to live in Austin and my dream was to move to the Virgin Islands, unfortunately that was not to be the case and I ended up here in NYC instead. I envy you man, you get to go from one paradise to another. Hey, do they still have Poke jo's down there in Austin?

Texas- Check out the thread on "Moving" from today. I am also most likely moving to STT this year and the 'Islander' gave me great advice. I have to go through the same thing, deciding what to take and what not to take...Good luck with everything!

TejasTom,

Bring:
Towels
Sheets
Your computer and accessories
your cell phone and charger
a week's worth of toiletries
whatever Austin/TX foodstuffs you can't live without (a jar of salsa? BBQ sauce?)
shorts and T-shirts and sandals
music
pictures that can be printed out again once they get wet/mold
swimsuits that fit you well

Leave:
furniture
The TV/ appliances
books that you don't love
anything other than the essentials
tchotchkes
your worries

Store:
anything you don't want to get eaten by mold/sunbleached/rusted
anything irreplacable.

We have all the Vita-Malt and Blackbeard's Ale you can drink down here. 😉
Can go shopping at K-Mart/Cost-U-Less/Havensight for anything you need.

Travel light! You'll be busy and hopefully very happy very soon 🙂

MORE TEXANS?!?
Bring Bevo- we could use some steaks!!

Just kidding! 😉

Don't put anything in the car that you can not stand to lose, as I don't think that theft is covered. Re: furniture... particle board tends to fall apart in the humidity, etc. However, lots of furniture is particle board.. Strange??? Wicker and rattan are pretty termite free. You can buy second hand furniture at Home Again in Red Hook or find stuff in the Island Trader- most apartments are furnished or semi-furnished. Can find TVs etc in the Island Trader. There is always someone comin' and always somone goin'... If there is something that you have a sentimental attachment to, bring it for those nights when you get homesick! Willie Nelson's "Stardust" is a great choice. I would not spend a lot to ship stuff until I knew I was going to stay... Bring your chili recipe for the chili cook-off in September sponsored by the Texas Society- nope, you are not alone, partner. Oh, MsChuy- look who's coming!!

Hi everyone,

ManhattanGuy, yes, Pokey Jo's is still in existence. If you get down to VI I'll fire up the pit (once I build it) and you'll forget all about Pokey Jo's.

EastEnder - I'm bringing my Aunt Francis' special chili seasonings and her recipe. When I was in Houston I participated at the NASA cook-offs and one near the Summit. I can't wait to do it again. I saw reports from last year's cookoff. Looks like fun.

MsChuy - Your dreams of a brewpub on St. Thomas may not be too far from reality. I'm bringing brewing equipment and may be serving some up as soon as February 1. Details as they come available. Won't be much at first, gotta see how much folks like the idea.

See ya'll after the 19th. Maybe I'll get to meet ya'll sometime down there.

Take care,
Tom

Tejas,

EastEnder's reference to me was that I'm from Texas. Being from Austin, you'll know how I got my moniker. Last time we had visitors, they brought down a frozen container of deluxe tomatillo sauce and a couple of frozen, uncooked chuychangas. Another friend boxed up a case of Shiner Bock, but all of the bottles didn't make it (you can get it here, anyway).

Looking forward to the brew pub. Give us a holler when you arrive!

MsChuy
