Leasing for small business..STT
Hi, My name is Chris.
I am planning on starting a small business in St. Thomas and my business will start out of a cart or kiosk to be put somewhere in downtown Charlotte Amalie. I need to know who to get in contact with about leasing information or rental information...But since it will be moblie and on the street I think I need to get in contact with the USVI government but I am not sure...Can someone help me with this?...Thank You
you need to get in touch with the Department of Licensing. There are no spots to put any carts on the street. There is one area for that, Vendor's Plaza.
Ronnie
Thanks for the reply Ronnie....Where is Vendors Plaza located and why can't I put it on the street or near one of the flea markets, like the one in downtown near where the ferry goes out to St. John?...I have looked for the department of licensing online and I am having trouble finding the info. I need...Do you have a telephone number, address, or website that I can contact them through?...Thanks again
Hello Klacah,
http://www.dlca.gov.vi/index.htm is the web site; their contact information is listed on the site.
Vendor's Plaza is the market you described that is downtown, not far from St. John ferry/waterfront.
You can't just set up on a sidewalk or streetside downtown because its not allowed.
The Dept. of Licensing should be able to direct you. All the best.

Thank You Islander....I have found the information I needed. See you soon on the island. 🙂
ok...So I have been in contact with the department of licensing and they tell me that there are no available spots in Vendors Plaza nor will there be any in the near future....But they did say that since I will be serving food and beverage from my cart (kiosk) that Vendors Plaza is not my only option. I just have to find somewhere that I can rent, just a space for a 8ft x 5 ft kiosk. Does anyone know anybody down there that has space available for lease?? Please I need a little more help here...Thank You
Hello Klacah,
The food/beverage vendors that are around Vendor's Plaza are just that around, they aren't quite in the rectangular area where the tables are set up. They are off to the side just a little, I believe there was a food van that was just accross the street too, last I was down that way. There are usually only about 3 or 4 that I have noticed; two food vans, a hot dog stand and an ice cream van is what comes to mind.
Much of downtown is historical so there are limits on what is allowed as far as signage, sidewalks etc. The alleys like Palm Passage, the alley by Hard Rock and a few others have bars, restaurants, kiosk selling nick nacks, jewerly in them. So contacting the various owners of retail space/alley space would be a suggestion. You would need to take a look and see which seems to have the most foot traffic, what would work. I don't know who to direct you to for downtown.
Havensight Shopping Area doesn't have kiosks except for a nice little hut/bar but its more toward Port of Sale. You could give them a try and see what they have to say. http://shopvi.com/
Coki Beach has a number of kiosk, booths. I am not sure who the right person to contact there would be??
There is a food van up on the Skyline Drive overlook where taxi tours stop - not sure how/who they got permission from.
The Port Authority is developing a shopping area at Crown Bay where some ships come in. You might give them a look-see. http://www.viport.com/ (Click on the link under Business Oppurtunities.)
If you are catering to residents... there are other options like the Tutu Park Mall and various other shopping areas.
A realtor might be able to assist on retail space availabilites.
Hope this helps a little.

Is the Crown Bay shopping center open yet?...On the interest to lease form on their wbsit it has a deadline of May 21st, 2004.
