bmv.vi.gov

Needs to be insured and inspected and registered before driving it.  And the road tax has to be paid before getting it out of port.  Need a moving permit to drive it from port to inspection.

I used a 3rd party service for everything, twice, it was quick, painless and not very expensive. They just contacted me and I picked the car up from them.  They were recommended by Blue Ocean Freight the company that shipped the cars.

Ok. Thx for that info. On the mainland moving from state to state you have 30 days to register car in the new state, usually. Is it the same in the VI’s?

No. It is not the same.   You have to clear customs, pay road tax, get a move permit, pass inspection, pay all all fees before you can legally drive the vehicle.  As others have said, hiring someone to do all this for you is advisable.   On St Thomas, I use Boynes Trucking.  Contact them to get clear on all the correct paperwork to save yourself a headache.

Highly recommend getting a 3rd party to handle all the registration and paperwork.  Cheap and a no-brainer versus figuring it all out yourself and the time involved.  We used Beep Business on STT and used Blue Ocean to ship the car from US Mainland.

Passing by but wanted To add context to some of the information here. Moving permits are not currently required. I did all my own paperwork about a week ago and they are waived until December due to Covid and you can drive it before getting it registered. I wouldn't push it though, its a grey area.

@aeroverra which island?   I’ve had to get move permits on STJ for the past year and a half at least. I deal with a corporate fleet so it seems like I’m always doing something vehicle related lol.
