Large Dog shipping / traveling

Right now there is no ferry from STT to STX.

Have you looked into United? The fly into PR and accept giant size crates (700 series). Not sure on weight limit, but I think its based more on crate size. You may have to flexible as to which airport in Florida or elsewhere that you fly out of. From there, you could take Seaborne Airlines to STX. Call them and ask them. They are usually very accomodating for large pets--they will dismantle the kennel, reassemble inside the plane, and then put the dog back in the kennel (since the giant crates won't fit through the door assembled). They fly out the the Isla Grande airport which is an easy taxi ride (or brief car rental) from the main airport in PR. Seaborne Airlines also flies out of STT so that could be an option too if you can get the dog to STT.

100lbs is the number I've seen (that's with the crate) & the private planes tend to run around 1,000 which is about as much as it costs to ship the animal "frieght"

I've read a few of the past threads on this forum on this topic & it seems the "fix" was a private plane charter or seaborne (which ended up costing about the same)

hopefully I'll hear good news back from airanimal tomorrow, STX will be home for me for a while.

wish you luck i know its important to have they fly with us and to be comfortable.

Have you checked Delta? They allow pets aboard, unfortunately yours would have to travel as cargo. They have a flight called Pet First, which is what breeders use to ship their pets across country. I know there is a ban on snubbed nosed dogs flying on most airlines.

You may also want to try this option, depending on how much you want your dog to go with you. You can fly with your pet on board. It's rather expensive though. WhenI checked on shipping my two birds along with me and my wife, it broke down to about $3500.00 one way. BUT, they can hold like 9 or so people and the more people on the plane, the cheaper the flight is for you. So you might have to be flexible when you want to leave as well.

So I know how you feel, I'm planning on taking my two birds with me. Fortunately they are both small enough to fit in carriers that will fit under the seat so I can take them on as carry ons.

My tenants relocated from WI with their 2 huge (but sweet) Great Danes. They are the size of small horses so ended up having to share a private plane with others.

As for dog in car, try sitting in it in back seat with your dog's favorite treats without actually going anywhere, spend some time getting her used to car. Try to get her comfortable with being in the car instead of looking at it as anxiety producing.

Is your dog kennel trained? Can you fit that sized kennel in your vehicle? If so, that might be an option.
If you are thinking of relocating, and your pup is not kennel trained, you should start getting her/him used to a kennel now.
Use favorite toys, feed her or him in kennel, leave in for short amounts of time and never use as punishment.
Mine like their kennels but I got them used to them while still pups. Maybe a dog trainer can help you?

I took out the front seat in my truck so have lots of room for all the dogs in one trip. It's easy to remove the seat.

I would use tranquilizers only as a last resort as it may result in even more anxiety after the fact.
If you do - try the tranquilizer out at home first when you will be home to see your dogs reaction prior to using it in a stressful situation.

The airlines are now recommending that you do NOT sedate your pets! Just brought large pet here in November...choices are not great, but luckily our dog was not as large as yours. But, still had to make trip from Arkansas to Miami in order for them to not have to change planes. Best to you and your beloved pet!

When you travel, it is also important to check ahead of your departure as all airlines have a cut off date during the summer and will NOT accept any pets especially as cargo due to heat in the cargo/baggage bays. Be sure to plan ahead.

I thought I should also mention that unless you have a place already lined up, it's a might difficult to find a rental that allows pets and even harder that allows dogs. There are very few places that have a fenced in yard as well. I've been looking for a rental that aill allow my wife and I our two birds and I'm finding it very difficult. I would say out of 25 or so rentals that I have looked into, only about 8 or so would allow cats, 5 or so would allow small dogs and about two-3 would allow birds and those places were not very clean or kept up.

I'm looking into bringing my large dog (she's about 115lbs) and it's proving to be quite difficult to find a way to get her from the US (probably from Florida) to STX.

I found a possible way to get her to St Thomas, is it possible to take the ferry to get her from STT to STX?

I recently flew my 90 lb. golden retriever from Boston to St Thomas. Delta is the only airline that would fly her as checked baggage because the combined weight of the dog and crate was over 100 lbs. They charge $250 for shipping the dog as checked baggage (plus the cost of your flight). I was very happy with my experience flying her with Delta.

There are options for flying large dogs via cargo with a couple airlines, but it is far more expensive (all airlines quoted me over $900) and from Boston to STT they said she'd have to have an overnight layover, which I wouldn't be comfortable with.

check out jet blue. we fly with them and they have a pet rewards problem. called jetpaws or some cute name. seem very animal friendly.

The ferry was repaired, but the ferry's owner, SeaTrans, is having financial and contractual problems and is not operating the route.

Other ferry companies sometimes do runs between STT and STX for special occasions like AgFair, July 4, and Carnival, but not as a regular route.

This was over 4 years ago, but we flew AA to San Juan, then got a small private charter from there.

If you can get to St. Thomas, there are some cargo ships that go back and forth. This is one: http://www.normahfreight.com/. I am not sure if they would take your dog, but they may.

JetBlue is likely another alternative.

ok, so best I've found so far is fly United to San Juan (they have a 150lb dog limit) then take cape air from PR to STX (it's limited to one dog per flight & the dog flys in the cabin with you) price ranges are like 60-180 depending on time of day (plus additional 20$ish for dog).

Sounds like this works best if you have a little time to plan.
