Hi all
So we just got back from st Thomas and had a great time. Really like St. John's!! Only thing I didn't like was all the hilly windy roads. I also found st Thomas a bit crowded. I was wondering what stx landscape was like? Same hilly roads. I would like to come see it. Looks like housing costs are a little better. Anyhow thanks for the help.
Dave

Hi Dave, St. Croix is a sedimentary uplift island, whereas the rest of the islands are volcanic in origin. St. Croix has roughly the same population as St Thomas yet with 4 times the land mass. St. Croix has hills and peaks but none so high as those of St. Thomas.

In layman's terms we equate St. Croix with Costa Rica and St. Thomas with Manhattan.

I had a friend who felt claustrophobic on St Thomas because of the hills. She moved to St Croix and felt free. But then she was from the one of the plains states.:D

Seriously?
Costa Rica is much more lush than STX and STT in no way resembles Manhattan.

STX and STT are night and day when it comes to terrain. Is the first thing we noticed the first time coming to the VI. And back then, US Air flew one flight to both islands so you could see both from the air on the same trip. STX has a full range of flat to mountains (hills) but with much more distance in between and most travel is on the flats or gentle hills. STX has a 4 lane highway. No place for a highway on STT. Largest flat area on STT is the airport and I think half of that was man made fill into the ocean. There certainly are some hilly windy roads on STX but it's a small percentage. This is one reason why we prefer spending more time on STX over STT.

The only thing about STT that remotely resembles Manhattan are some of the prices. I don't get either analogy. STT can feel crowded on certain days. Easy to find out which days you don't want to be in town or at the popular tourist beaches. I never feel crowded here, but I avoid crowds and live in a very uncrowned area

STT is more like Myrtle Beach.

The only thing remotely similar to Manhattan about St Thomas is the hubbub in particularly the Havensight area by the cruise ship terminal when multiple ships are in. Stuck in traffic there at times and with all the tourist bodies shuffling by, I've very often felt as though I'm in Times Square and can't wait for the traffic lights to change so I can quickly get out of it, up and over the mountain to return to the wonderful peace and quiet of my North side home!

Myrtle Beach? That's flat as a pancake so where's the comparison?

STX is comparatively flat, flat, flat, Houses lined up next to other on flat land separated by fences - something not seen on STT. Once you leave the "flat" of STT waterfront, it's all up the steep mountain and down the other side with the only relative "flats" across the top of the island (from where you can get a bird's eye view of the Atlantic on one side and the Caribbean on the other) and on the lower main roads West to East.

It's all good - just very different.

I love the theatre district on STT, so close to the financial district. All the giant skyscrapers on this flat land totally brings me back to NYC. If NYC is the Big Apple STT is the Little Mango.

STT is to the city, where STX is to the country.

And before anyone get's too excited about our four lane highway, it's important to point out that it has lots of stop lights! Also in most of the westerly end the road is pretty choppy so it's more like 1.5 lanes each side.

Germany may the autobahn, but here in STX we proudly have the rastabahn. 😎

I love the posted speed limit signs......within a mile: 30, 55, 45, etc. all for no apparent reason. I believe that they are rhetorical.

I thought they were only a suggestion.

The reason the speed limit drops from 55 to 30 is to cause one to slow down on approach to intersections with traffic lights -which is also where vehicles may be entering the highway from the cross road. Much easier to stop when going 30 than if going 50. I'm just saying.
