Kiteboarding can't find old posts

My wife and I are moving to help in the hospital for a while. I want to pick up kite boarding because it's free for wind and looks fun. I was going to get some lessons but I can pick up a bunch of stuff here for very cheap 100s instead of thousands, because the N.W. is a wind sport mecha and even 2006 gear sells cheap.

I wanted to re-read some old post I saw previously but couldn't find them with the search (kite, kiteboarding kite surfing, etc came up with only helicopter forum fight, sure entertaining posts :). Does anyone know about a local club, or kite boarding business, or have an email/ website.

THANKS!

Stew

I'm trying to figure out typical winds to decide on kite sizes.... 5mph to 15 mph or up to 25mph from trade winds It seemed like weather showed averages about 7mph to 8mph on both STT and STX.

I assume that summer provides wider ranges of wind though what's an average. Any sailors out there, I don't have a boat but have a set of gloves and racing experience. Cal 20s to 30+ cruisers or race rigged

John at West Indies Windsurfing should be able to help you with kiteboarding. While the wind may be free, the equipment isn't! 😉 For sailing, when you get here, call the St Thomas Yacht Club and ask about club races. They race a modified J-24 called an IC-24. You can check it out before you join.

I am surprised that the average wind is only 7-8. I would have thought it was more like 10-15. Today it is very windy, for example. It is supposed to be 15-20, but seems stronger.

you might want to talk to some before you buy used gear. you need to get your gear to suit you size, how much you weight, how tall ect.

you should start with smaller sails. you don't want to be over powered. Like a shoe one size don't fit all.

West indies windsurfing for lessons. he can size you up and sell you the gear. support the local economy

Does anyone know of a way to get John's email over at West Indies Windsurfing? I couldn't find a website or anything. I'm hoping for a electronic business registry for the business association or something there.

I agree with ost of you and thanks for the advice. I was totally planning on buying a board/ harness and tons of lessons from them. I just can't afford 1000s for the kites vs $200 for two of them. However I'm not going to spend the same amount of money here when I can do it there and support my neighbors. We move on July 4th so see everyone around. I'll be the guy being dragged around the ocean with a kite attached 🙂

As I said before, when you get here, give him a call. If you are waiting for an electronic business registry, you are going to be waiting a while.... Most people who do kite surfing have some sort of chase boat with them, at least during the learning process.

Hi there, If you have not already figured it out there is another school for kiteboarding.

While I don't have John's number, and getting to his place is rather tricky...the road is not the best...I do have the other one.

Besides John at West Indies, there is IslandSol Sailing School. The owner, Paul Stoeken is an excellent teacher for sailing, windsurfing and kiteboarding. He is independent but works out of the beach at the Ritz Carlton. He and John at West Indies collaborate some times as well, so if you really want to work with with West Indies, you can ask Paul and he will have no problem directing you. But I would recommend Paul. Honestly. Great guy. Excellent teacher.

Only catch is that you have to tell him his old friend Michelle referred you online! I like to take the credit for referrals what can I say, plus I owe him a favor so I am helping him out. ...and you as well! 🙂

I know he would appreciate the advertising so here is his info:
For more information his website is : www.islandsol.net. Business line is 340-344-2021 or 340-776 WIND. Just be sur to ask for Paul and not the others. He is the kiteboarding instructor. I think there may be one other guy, but I would stick with Paul.

Enjoy!

Also, John quite literally works out of a shack on the beach! Is refreshing actually. I highly doubt he will be responding to email in a timely manner! Not his speed.

John got back to me within two days and sounds like he has lots of gear.

Just to update the thread to let future people know.
