King Gov's Extravagance
Read on the Consortium that the local King in the USVI's is spending $12,500 every month for his private quarters in St. Thomas. Also heard that the King charters a private aircraft to move between the two islands... This while the King has about 16 days worth of operating cash on hand.
I have ridden on Cape Air and Seaborne with Gov Turnbull & Gov DeJongh in years past. King Mapp & his Vice-King fly charter and say it is in the name of "security". Give me a break.
so all of you bitching about dejoung are now bitching about mapp
A fiscally responsible government is an oxymoron in most any region.
But we do seem to be outstanding in our flippancy.

The former Governor's alleged extravagances/fiscal misdeeds will seem petty in comparison once Mr Mapp gets into the full swing of following the lead of his mentor, Dr Schneider.
that is what i am thinking too.
So do you think the $12,500 rental is owned by a friend or relative? I wonder what in normally rented for prior to it being rented to Mapp? "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss"
Charter for Security???? Why he's a Governor.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss"
You really had to have been around during King Schneider's reign to appreciate the ironic repeat of history.
I'm surprised there isn't a dedicated Governor's home
There is, but it's got mold and asbestos and needs other repairs. Nobody wants to live, and they can't figure out an affordable use for it.

It was a gorgeous home until Turnbull spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer's money "refurbishing" and "modernizing" it. I have no doubt the opulent velvets and brocades he had installed (more in tune with a Reno bordello than a Governor's mansion) had a huge effect on airflow with resultant mold. I never knew it to have any mold problem before - the air flow was wonderful.
Now, we get Monarch Mapp.
$12,500.00 rental per month gets you a major luxury home with all the bells and whistles here in STT. Of course, there are many less expensive rentals available but nothing but the best for our monarch.
I mean, governor.
If other governors took the seaplane, why can't he instead of spending our money for private charter flights?
The term "budget" and "living within one's means" is a unknown and unexplored concept for our many government officials, past and present, elected to SERVE the public. We're broke but the spending and borrowing will continue.
Aren't you proud we have a governor that's willing to pay his back taxes on a payment plan and has to issue a press release to do so?
His new hires for his cabinet also get an increase in pay over their predecessors.
But, hey, we're broke! Let the spending continue!
Mapp was obnoxious then and will be even worse now.
when he would fly on a commercial plane, his "security" men (the ones with the gold necklaces so heavy they could almost not hold their heads up straight) would block off at least half of the entire waiting area in the stx airport, so no one could sit, etc. We heard him chastise AA purser on flight to the states for addressing him as "Mr. Mapp" instead of using his "Correct Title of Lt Gov". Only good part was imagining what might have happened to his first class airline meal before he was served on that flight.
Flew in same cabin with Turnbull, even right after 9/11, and there was none of the same garbage, before, during or after his flight. Even as he waited to claim his luggage in NY...with both a VI policeman and NY state police there, he was still receptive to strangers speaking to him etc...
But, hey, we're broke! Let the spending continue!
Don't stop the carnival!
I believe there is a website where you can see who contributed to which politicians at a federal level. I wonder if we had similar transparency here that we'd see the owners of Mapp's rental pad on the list of campaign contributors. It's fun to speculate in the absence of accurate disclosure.
12.5k for a rental - criikey! Well I guess it is 'high season'.
Maybe we can legislate a reasonable cap - Yea Right!
12.5k for a rental or 500,000 for security updates???? which is better, which is worse or are they both the same
Plus, when contract and the lease is all done, it will be made available to the public and it would not reflect that mistake printed in the Avis, so I felt this morning to take the opportunity to say to the public what the amount is,” he said.
You recover 500k in just over 3 years.
Spending 500k actually employs a few people
so all of you bitching about dejoung are now bitching about mapp
Looks like this is the case speee1dy. Apparently being elected governor has no boundaries on being completely irresponsible when it comes to wasting taxpayers money.
I didn't hear the press conference yesterday, but the article in the Daily News this morning indicated that his house is out east in Nazarethville. I haven't seen the limo entourage or anything, but will have to keep my eyes (more) open. The paper also indicated he is going to send a bunch of prisoners to the states, have the National Guard help the police get a grasp in crime, and auction off half of the government vehicles. As an aside, he stated that there are 874 vehicles on St. Croix and 828 on St. Thomas-St. John. I say get rid of them all and let 'em take the safari!;)
lol

Yeah, a lot of what he said sounds fiscally wise for the Territory. I liked a lot of what I heard about his plans for getting things under control. I am cautiously optimistic about his plans, although the news about the $12,500/mo house causes me quite a bit of concern.
that and the party for over 300 last night at the divi for some gov workers or retirees, not sure which. especially when we now have only 14-15 days left of money and he is guaranteeing that people will get their refunds.
What surprised me is that government vehicles were driving around with private plates in order to hide the abuses of the use of government vehicles.

With as many gov't plates that I've seen around, I had no idea there were a lot of other vehicles with private plates. Shady, indeed. Good for king gov in putting an end to that.
