Kayaks
When I get on the islands im going to want to buy a sea kayak. Probably used.
Does anyone know what price im looking at for a use sea kayak in ok. condition. Preferably with at least 1 dry storage space?
Also when im not using the kayak are there any kind of per month beat side. storage rental areas for things like this. Or do you need to take it back to your house?
Also does anyone have any experience kayaking betwen the islands? Especially down to St. Croix? Up into the BVI?
Thanks
Ian
I am NOT a boater, but I don't think I'd want to kayak from STT to STX. Can one do 40 miles in a kayak?
There is a local gentleman that trains down at Saffire beach most weekends who has kayaked to Puerto Rico before and is currently training to kayak to St. Kitts. He is an unbelievable machine to watch in the water. His name is Charles and if you go to Saffire Beach on the weekends you cant miss him.
Get yourslef an Island Trader and kep you eye out. They are for sale every so often. Maybe Charles can help? The number to Sapphire is 340-775-6100. I think he works in the watersports center. Isn't he the one that windsurfed to Puerto Rico, too?
My hubby and I were in Hawaii once, on Kauai, and tried to kayak up the one small river on the island ( a feat accomplished daily by many people) and after about 1/4 mile I was ready to beat him over the head with the paddle out of frustration and exhaustion, and I consider myself pretty fit! I can't imagine anyone paddling distances like the man mentioned by Eric. I greatly admire someone capable of that. However, I couldn't imagine even trying to paddle to St. Croix myself... good luck to you, Ian!

Ill obviously have to get in better shape in order to attempt something like going down to St. Criox but it doesn't seem that impossible. And inter island and BVI seems like it would be no trouble at all.
How far is it from St. Criox to St Kitts?
Ian: These would be adventurer trips. St Croix to St Kitts, as the crow flies, is around 130 miles- of open, usually rough ocean. Going across in a nice big sailboat with all the luxuries- radar, GPS, autohelm, etc. is tough...In fact, usually you sail from Virgin Gorda to St Martin, then down to St Kitts... If you go FROM St Croix, you are usually going into the wind and waves. You will see more kayaks around St Thomas, St John and the BVI, as the navigation is a bit easier, and your VHF radio will hail traffic. But, have fun planning!!
Happy New Year. I ran across a small kayak rental place in St. John yesterday. They probably have access to information regarding used kayaks for sale. I don't have the number on me but the email address was crabbys@earthlink.net. If you want to wait until monday I have the number in my office.
Pamela.
Thanks pamela ill give them an email!
Ian,
In case you haven't reach them via email - the number is 714-2415

Hello Ian,
Eric's suggestion of seeking out Charles is a good one. He actually works downtown Charlotte Amalie but is often on Sapphire beach on Sundays. Last time I asked him about kayaking he talked very enthusiastically, non-stop for about an hour.

They do 1 to 5 day kayaking trips around St. John & to the BVI's. They might be of some help to you for information, used kayaks or a guide of sorts.
