Just Returned
Hi all,
I just got back from STT last Thursday (9/04). I was down there for a week looking for a place to live. I had a great time!!
Some advise:
-Everyone helped me out when asked.
-The Island Trader comes out every Thursday, you will definitely want to get a copy of that. They are pretty much everywhere, (bars, corner stores, etc.). It will have the newest rental listings as well as things to do.
-DEFINITELY rent a car! Some places only post signs in their yards, no Trader ads. You will only find them driving around. Hills are very STEEP!!!
-Try to use a local phone # for return calls. Some people I called did not return my calls because my cell # was from Mich.
-I put a wanted ad for myself in the Trader, stating what I was looking for. I've had a few calls. I also used my email address in the ad. It's only $5! Ph.#'s: 340.714.9120 or 340.714.9131.
-Ask a local about a particular area you are looking at renting, lots of good advise about good and bad areas as well as different climates on the island.
-Have pen and paper ready to write down directions!!!
-Ask how much and/or what utilities are included with lease. Water and electric can be very expensive.
-If you do sign a lease, I was told that you better make sure you will get your security deposit back, some folks will keep this. Make sure you state that in the lease.
-Watch out for IGUANAS! They are like squirrels down there, EVERYWHERE.
Another tidbit of info I found is that you can NOT ship a vehicle down there if you have a loan on it, or have permission from your bank to take it off the main land. Also, the Customs duty is now 6%. You could be looking at $2000+/-, just to ship and register a vehicle. Check out: www.tropical.com or www.crowley.com, these are the 2 main shippers there.
I hope this helps everyone out, as far as I know this info is all accurate.
The Island Trader does NOT have a web site, why is that???
David,
Right on about shipping cars - no loans on it. Good tip for others.
I will take a quess at Island Trader not being online... The Daily News only rencently was added online and not in its complete print form just some articles and some classifieds. The Island Trader is published by the same company and its almost all classifieds... I don't think the concept of on-line classifieds has necessarily caught on yet in terms of the general population for yard sales, apartments, used cars, personals...- which is who puts the classifieds in the print papers... so I don't think the newspaper sees the financial benefit of putting the Island Trader online; I suppose they could just as well sell some one an online classified in the newspaper web site rather then create another site for it. I might be wrong...

Hello Everyone,
This is to clarify. I JUST got off the phone with Tropical (1-800-367-6200). To ship a vehicle with a lien, you must provide the following information:
1) An ORIGINAL, notarized letter from the lien holder on company letterhead granting permission to export the vehicle. This letter must contain the following:
a) The make, model, year, and VIN # of the vehicle
2) Three (3) NOTARIZED certified copies of the front and back of the title. BOTH sides must be notarized.
Vessels ship on Wednesdays and Fridays. Tropical is required by law to hold the vehicle for 3 working days prior to shipping. For instance, if you deliver your vehicle on a Monday to Tropical, it will ship on that Friday, providing there is space available. Vehicles are shipped on a first-come, first-serve, space available basis.
