Or do we, as whites, notice racism more here because it is usually directed at us?

Possibly and more likely that the majority of white people who move here come from predominantly white communities and aren't used to being in any minority group.

Which is why I disagree with spee1dy's observation that, "there is more racism on this island than i have seen anywhere else in the states".

I don't often agree with OT, but I do here. I think a lot of white-non-jewish-non-hispanic folks just aren't used to being a minority. Rather than resent it, I honestly consider it a privilege to have had the ability to live in a place that forced me to look at the world from that perspective. The More You Know [TM] and all that.
