Me and my family are looking to relocate from maryland. I have fifteen years experiece running construction crews in commercial kitchens. What is the career situation. Will it be hard for me to find something in this field?
Thanks,

construction in commercial kitchens? We are small islands with limited number of restaurants and commercial food prep facilities. I'm sure there is some demand for this but you'd probably need to diversify into other areas of expertise. There's probably a decent market for service/repairs.

Schools... how many children do you have? Many 'transplants' opt for private school for their kids. And that can be pretty expensive, $15k or more a year. The public schools are still on split sessions and even though they hope to not be next year I am not holding my breath on that one.

There are definitely construction jobs to be had now. Most of the FEMA and FEMA contract stuff is looking for jack of all trades kind of people. The STEP/EHR contracts are just getting started and there are thousands of homes on their list.

Public schools here are a mess. Some were damaged by the hurricanes then left to rot by the local government. Split sessions refers to the fact that kids from two or more schools are all attending one school, some in the AM session some in the PM session. Its not an environment that you would want to send your kids.

The kids in the public schools are only going 1/2 days right now, and I would bet that they will be doing the same for a good part of next year. We lost several public schools in the territory and they are in the process of getting modular classrooms so they can extend the school day to a full day. They had lots of makeup days scheduled, and the first school calendar had school letting out on July 12th. They have since changed that date to June 29th with the reasoning they needed time to get the said modular classrooms in place. Based on their earlier releases stating how long it took to order and deliver the classrooms, I don't see how they will be here in early July. Let alone the problem of where they are going to put these modular classrooms.

My son attends Julius E Sprauve School on St. John. He is in 2nd grade and is in school from 8am until noon. The St. John School of the Arts is offering free classes this year to help fill the gap. He attends after school arts programs from noon until 2:15 every day. This has been a unique year in many ways. Although I would not have chosen this path we are on, I have to say I'm thankful for the experience it has brought. My son is excelling in school and also getting exposure to a lot of the arts that he wouldn't have if things weren't the way they are now.

My oldest son attended Gifft Hill School (private) when he was young. At the start of this school year, they opened up their school with waived or reduced tuition. The public school system has it's issues, no doubt. But I didn't consider sending my son to GHS even if they were offering it free and a full day.
