Hi, I live in San Jose, California, here we pay a lot of tax. And because of job outsouce, we lost job here. I am a statistician and working at semiconductor industry for a long time. I am interested in relocation to UVI, since I heard my neighbor (her husband works at BVI) said that it is no difficult to find job there but it is difficult to find housing. I think I can do anything from low pay job to office worker, or tutoring in Math. I know computer and science. Of cause, I am not dream to find a job related to my background and experiences. And i am wondering what season is the best time to go there and find a survive job? If I come to Feberary, can I still find a job for living? If you can give me some advice, it is greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Dear Hurl
I grew up near San Jose, Ca. (Campbell) I understand the problems of living in "silicon valley".
Your message suggests that you were not born speaking english. You probably have some interesting perspectives of life in California.

Life in the USVI is very different from Silicon Valley. Houses are expensive in both places. In the virgin islands because mainland money (mostly east coast) has driven the prices way up beyond the reach of local people. That is, of course, true in San Jose too. A house that use to sell for $85,000 on St Thomas just a few years ago now sells for $500,000. ( on St John $1,000,000). That same house would sell for $1.600,000 in San Jose, Ca. (that same house sold for $80,000 just 25 years ago)

But more importantly, what is the potential? Well you can get a "high tech" type job in the Viirgin Islands, but the pay will we less than 1/2 of what you got in San Jose. There are fewer options. Almost no development or manufacturing jobs, but some internet jobs.

Living here is very different. The government and police are corrupt. (in San Jose they cover corruption up better). However government incompetence affects you more in the Virgin Islands because of the smaller size and social differences.

Would you be happy living here? Many people are happy here...check it out.

I am considering moving to the USVI. Stxer, Islander or anyone else with constructive advice, can you please tell me what are the job prospects for social workers there? Salary? Cost of Living? What does one need to earn in order to live comfortable?

I would also like to know what would you suggest I do in order to assure a successful move to USVI from NYC?

Please state any other information that you believe would be beneficial...I would greatly appreciate it.
