Some of you have mentioned that your relocation was paid for by your employer. If you don't mind sharing, what company (or if you don't want to say the name of the company, at least what type of position or type of job do you work in) do you work for?

Since your goal is STX, I know Hovensa pays an employee relocation allowance in some instances. I also know some professionals (doctors, lawyers) who had a relocation allowance.

I love STX but my husband's job is going to be important in determining where we go so I'm also open to going to STT. Love STJ but don't think we can afford it 🙂

Anyway, I'm open to hearing responses for all islands. Thanks!

My husband's relocation was partially paid for by an inspection company that inspects Hovensa called Acuren Inspection. You don't want to work for them though, they promise alot and don't do anything they promise.

I know the Ritz in STT will pay relocation, in some instances, for management employees. They will even let some higher up managers live on property until they can find housing. The Club side of the resort will remain open, However, The hotel side of the resort will be closed from August 15-November 4th for renovations.

I believe the bottom line is that if you are "head-hunted," i.e. you have a particular qualification for a job that can't be filled by someone on-island, you might be compensated for your moving expenses.

dntw8up's response rather covered it when he mentioned that doctors and lawyers SOMETIMES are recompensed for travelling expenses but IMHO that would be more the case for specialized physicians and attorneys.

I don't know your husband's field, goalstx, but it sounds from your post that you're just speculating at this point.

It's very rare that you can find a "passage paid" deal here. The best of luck with your plans!

GoalSTX -

My husband was "head-hunted" to work as a contractor at Hovensa. He was given a referral by another "temp" employee working at Hovensa that retired from the same company that my husband did (he currently works here, knew my husband and his skills/experience, knew he was getting ready to retire, knew there was a job opening and gave my husband a call). What followed was a whirlwind hiring process that eventually meant that my husband retired for ONE WHOLE DAY, then we flew here the next day.

The temp agency that he works for paid for both of our trips down, paid him for the travel day, plus will pay up to $3000 to ship items down. They'll reverse the process when the job ends (his choice or when the project ends in December 2007). He is being paid a wage FAR higher than he made at his former job plus gets a daily "per diem" to cover housing/food costs. He also gets a slightly less "per diem" for the days that he is "off island" - to cover the cost of the condo rental while he/we go home for a visit. Oh... and we also get a rental car and gas paid for by Hovensa. 🙂 I suppose we are very lucky because this agency has followed through on everything they had promised. But then, he also signed an employment contract with them that bound them to make good on their promises.

As mentioned by STT Resident, my husband had the skills & experience they were looking for to fill a particular position. He had worked in an industrial setting for over 30 years and had the training & certifications that the job required.

We know that we have a really great deal here...(it's like winning the lottery)... and we have thanked our friend many, many times for referring my husband for this job.

No question, when Hovensa wants a specific skillset they are willing to pay for it in serious fashion. From moving expenses to a housing stipend to per diem to private school tuition for children to moving you back to the mainland afterwards, they take care of some employees in a very impressive way. Others get paid well, but don't get the full benefits package that is on the table for certain specialties. Congrats to your husband for being on the AAA list!! I hope you enjoy your time on the island. It can be wonderful if you have the right mindset about what you expect to find here.

Prior to this job coming up, we had already made plans to be away from home for an extended period of time.

We sold our house and bought a condo a few years ago. Our children are all on their own. Our youngest is a senior in college, but has an apartment and lives near Michigan State full time. Our parents are in relatively good health. We're still young (48 & 52) and in excellent health so this is a good time to venture out and enjoy ourselves.

We have a large motor home which we've used for vacations up to a six weeks long, at times. Our plan for post-retirement was to tour the U.S., Canada and Mexico for 3-4 months at a time, visiting interesting places and looking for beautiful sights. IMHO, you can't get a better view than the one I can see right now.

This worked out perfectly for us. And... when this adventure ends, we'll head back to Michigan and go back to Plan A... with a little extra padding in our bank accounts. 🙂
