Job will be main street- do people depend on the Safari bus to get to work?

Hi,
I am relocating next week and working downtown. I'm not planning on purchasing a car for a few months. I am wanting to know if the locals successfully use the Safari bus to get to and from work.

Just a disclaimer-
I know there is no set schedule. I know the bus only travels to certain areas and I've already mapped the route it takes. I also know the bus stops at sundown, and that won't be a problem for me getting home from work as I will be off at 5:00 daily.

I just would like to hear some success stories from people who know it can work. I will be needing to be at work by 9:00am daily. How long could I be standing outside waiting for a bus?

Thanks in advance

Lots of people take it. No schedule so you never know how long you have to wait. Just plan on getting to town at 8:30 so you have extra minutes.

Hard to believe but VITRAN doesn't seem to have its own website or bus schedule, online.

Telephone them for info.

Here's what VI Now has to say.

Good luck!

You may want to make a couple exploratory runs and ask bus driver.

Vmruss asked about safari and the description given sounds like the $1-$2 safari - not the VITRAN bus. The VITRAN bus runs every 2 hours whereas safaris run when they feel like it. Sometimes they are frequent sometimes not.

OP may have better luck trying a combination of the 2.
If he's coming from the east end into town, there's usually a safari taxi that meets the incoming STJ ferry by the entrance at about 20 after the hour.
There are more options for either a bus or safari along that route into town but you have to be on the main road.

Be aware tho that certain areas have no public transportation at all.
Especially the north and south sides of island.

It depends on where you are on the route, and how full the safaris are already when they get to you. For instance, if you want to hop on board in Red Hook, the safaris fill up with ferry passengers right after the boats come in, especially first thing in the morning.

I would plan on 10-15 minutes wait time just in case all the safaris that pass you are full. You might find it takes less time, and it probably will -- all depends on your location.

Also, sometimes taxi association drivers will ask you if you want a ride and you have to know that they plan to charge you full fare, much more than the $1-$2 safari fare. If you aren't sure, ask.

Congrats and good luck!

I don't recall if the bus system still exists or not, but I used to work as a maintenance guy in TuTu and would catch the bus from Blue Beards Hotel where I also did maintenance work and then catch the bus back and also used the buss when I needed to go pickup supplies for jobs if it was small enough to carry on the bus with me. But this was back in the late 60's. There weren't no safaries back in them days.

VITRAN bus system certainly still exists.
The Town - up Crown Mt. road -to Bordeaux bus route is used by a good number of people every day and is the only bus OR safari truck service on the small part of the Northside - Rt. 301.

VITRAN exists for now, but service was suspended for a few years until the fed paid for new busses. It now runs 6 days a week when it used to run 7.

Thanks Exit, I hadn't seen one in a while so was curious. I remember they were very efficient back in the olden days hahaha.
