Job Services in Sunny Isle
Hi all... I am using the america's job bank(www.ajb.org) to search for employment opportunities on STX. I have found many so-so, good and great positions listed for all three big islands. My question is: Does anyone have any experience/info on dealing with the job services program and people there? All the jobs listed tell you to send a cover letter/resume to an office in CA and I've tried calling there and the STX office to no avail. Everything i send goes into the island black hole and i'm wondering if they are just on island time, or is it futile to attempt to make contact beyond going in person. When I do get there, (20 days!!!) I will hang at their office until i get served, but in the meantime, many of these posted positions are getting stale. Anyone...?
Hello jnrhome,
Are these the numbers you have? Labor Department, 340)773-1994 (Christiansted) or (340)772-0180 (Frderiksted) and (340)6-3700 for St. Thomas. You have to ask for the job services people to get connected to the right office.
The procedure for applying for jobs through the Labor Department requires going to the Labor Department's Job Services office in person and bringing with you, your resume, picture ID - like Drivers License, Social Security Card, Birth Certificate... and registering for their job service program and then you can get information on the jobs they have there.
I don't know that mailing or faxing them letters works. You might try calling them again and asking.

Islander- Yes, those are the numbers I have. I've called them many times and only ever got recordings. I've left numerous messages at all the numbers and got no reply. The job services website includes how to apply. Evry VI job listed has the same address to send a resume/cover letter to. I've sent multiple packages to them over several months, but still no response. I am registered both on the OSOS VI Job services website, and the america's job bank website, but there is no way to connect my resume with a prospective position. I imagine that is done by a person in the dept. as it is here in Ohio, but... By registering on the site, you get access to what there is available, but there is no way that i've found so far that gets you to the next level: connecting resume to position. Has anyone here actually gone to the job services office and been through the procedure? or better yet, found a job through them? I even signed up as an employer and tried to find a way to connect to prospective employees that way, but nothing.
Hello,
Rarely will someone in a government office call you back, or such has been my experience. When it happens I am always pleasantly surprised. And I'd be particularly surprised if they returned an off island or long distance call.
I believe the address listed with the jobs from the Labor Dept. Job Services is that of the Labor Department.
I understand you are registered on their website however I don't think this equates to being registered with them. We have been in touch with the Labor Dept. to set up posting the jobs they have on file on this site and when we did this it was explained that to apply for the jobs they have on file you had to come into their office in person and register, meet with a representative. This was several months ago so perhaps there in person policy has changed... but I doubt it. They don't show who is offering the job when they provide the job description, this was also explained to us, and that is why you aren't finding how to do that. The Labor Dept. is the next the step in connecting your resume to the job, but I think being in their office in person is the key.
I do know a few people that have gotten hired for jobs by going through the Labor Department, people on island that went in person.
Anyone contact them from away and receive a response??

I went to the job services location at Sunny Isle a few times when I first got here. Other posters are correct, I think it is exteremely unlikely you will be able to do anything from off island. the people there are friendly and competant. I applied for a few jobs with them, none of them actually came through. I understand your frustration jnrhome, as I tried to do some "advcance work" on finding a job before I got here. It just doesn't happen. Further, you will have to be fairly pro active when seeking a job once you get here. I actually found the job I have now by aproaching the CEO of the organization with a job proposal for a position tha didn't exist at the time, and got a job that way!! To make matters even more unlikely, it was with a semi autonomous governmental agency!!!!!!! Think creatively, a hard working, clever person will be able to find a decent job anywhere, and this place is no exception, but it probably won't happen the it does back in the states.
Jnrhome,
Welcome to da island, mon! We experienced The Dept of Labor at Sunny Isle when we moved here.......lots of wasted time in our case. As had been said many, many times - 99.99% of the time you need to be here in person. The DOL spends a LOT of time getting you registered, then lets you look in big books of certain job openings that they think you qualify for - its not a very efficient process - so, again, 'welcome to da island, mon!' Its just life here, please don't fight it; some of us enjoy the craziness of life here (myself included). You need to read the book "Stop the Carnival" before you move here; it will help prepare you 😉
My husband found employment on his own, despite hours at the DOL. Now that its 'high-season' you shouldn't have much trouble. I do have 1 friend who got a referral from DOL that did work into a job. So, I can't say it won't ever happen.....
I've dug extensively through what I can find from here and this seems to be the most comprhensive list of employment opportunities available. Fat lot of good it does if they don't respond. I've resigned myself to hunting once I'm there. I have actually arranged much more from here than expected to (which was nothing at all). I have arranged for housing, transportation, utilities, phone, etc. the gap is in employment. I never expected to get this far from here, so I've managed to trim the list of necessities down to a job. That certainly focuses my first efforts once i get there (19 days!!!). I appreciate the insights to this situation as it prepares me for what lies ahead. I had planned on camping at their office first thing and will do that post haste. Any other suggestions for opportunities are welcomed!
