Job Prospects - BSME
Hi folks! I've been reading your board with much fascination. My dream has been to move to the caribbean for at least 5 years now and I've been working toward that goal diligently. I'm a single dad right now with a 15 year old daughter. She'll enter 10th grade this fall. My plan is to get her out of high school and into college, quit the day job, sell everything I can and give away the rest, then move to the islands. To that end, I've been building my savings to make the above possible. I currently work in the mechanical engineering profession and I'm curious about the job opportunities in that field in the U.S.V.I.. Are there any?
It doesn't really matter however. I'm fairly weary of that grind anyway. I'd be content to take a job at a Home Depot or as a carpenter or mechanic or such. I plan to have enough funds tucked back to sustain myself. Any income I can earn from a job will just make things that much easier. I also am fairly skilled in making money investing in stocks. I can do that anywhere I have an internet connection.
Any thoughts from any of you seasoned natives? I'm 41 years old and ready to start my 2nd childhood!
PS:
I run religiously to stay healthy. Is there much in the way of organized running there? Does the weather and terrain make running difficult?
Thanks,
Jay
What island are you considering? I just moved to St. Croix three weeks ago. It's the only major island that has considerable flat terrain that I assume would be ideal for running. I do see people out early in the morning and around 6 pm who walk and run, especially on weekends. I also see people running in groups. Weather early and late in the day would almost always be ideal.
Any top stock picks?

Sounds like a beautiful place to run. Are there strong breezes there most of the time?

Not currently. I've been too preoccupied with other things of late.
Jay,
I'm also a runner, and was in STT ealier this month to check it out for a possible move in a year or so. While I hear that there are running clubs on the island, there does not appear to be many places to run, particularly if you're used to flat terrain (I'm from Florida!). There is a flat road on the airport property, but it's only about a mile long. I asked another runner I saw who lives on STT what other flat terrain was on the island. She mentioned one other place, but I can't recall the name.
Good luck!
