job offer

Hello,
I am up for a job on the islands and they want to know my salary requirements. It would be my wife, our two big dogs and a newborn moving to St. Thomas. As I've read its hard to find a place that takes pets so we would prefer to buy or rent a house but I don't know how much I would need to make to support my family. According to vinow.com cost of living is 33% more than most U.S. cities, so should I just increase my current budget by 33% to come up with a salary. If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know.
Thanks
Matt

I am in the same predicament as you. I have done a substanital amount of research on the cost of living down there. I am from Philadelphia and the prices for major things (Real Estate, Rents, etc.) look like it is about the same. You do not pay state or city wage taxes so for me that is a 7.5% raise by itself. It looks like it will be an issue of getting "nickle-and-dimed" by day-to-day items. Good luck.

But the higher price of goods (e.g., groceries and household items) eats up the difference pretty quick.

OTOH, alcohol and cigarettes are cheaper here than anywhere else in the U.S.

No sin tax either.

Dave: While there is no sales tax, there is a gross receipts tax that the retailer (and wholesaler) has to pay the local government on all goods they sell. You can guess who really pays it!
