I am a RN of 10 years and have been offered a job at the VICC in St. Croix. After researching I see that the heart Surgeon has left the island and I was wondering how long the Cath Lab will be able to do interventions without a surgical back up? Are they hiring a new surgeon? I dont want to make the move if the lab will close down in the next year without surgical back up. Maybe laws are different down there or they are perfoming just diagnostics caths now.

Thanks,

Ted

I don't know about St Croix, but on St Thomas we have a cath lab with no surgery back-up. We do have an interventional radiologist for some procedures. All the best in your new job!!

Thanks EE,

Do you know if emergency stenting of Left Main coronaries are perfomed in STT. I was told only STX does this procedure since a Cardiac surgeon is (was) present. This is the confusion I am having. All hospitals in Mainland must have surgical backup so I am wondering what the outlook is on STX regarding complex heart catheterizations regrding longevity if i move.

Before the Cardiac Care Unit was in place the hospital used to require that a helicopter be standing by to evac the patient to Puerto Rico if necessary. They have probably reverted to this.
