Job hunting advice on STX please?
Hello! I will be there this Friday and am wondering if anyone has job hunting advice since it seems most of the employers don't use online resources (because they want you to be on island first I guess?). My skills are legal/administrative and would need full time employment. Any thoughts, suggestions and leads much appreciated!
Probably best to get a phone book and local newspaper, have updated resume in hand and make the rounds. Craig's List has some postings, now and then for STX.
Good luck to you. Hope it all works.
Good Friday will be a difficult time to job search. Many businesses and all government offices will be closed. And Easter Monday continues the government holiday season. Can you just settle in until next week? 😉
This is my third trip and first really serious pre-move visit. I will be there for a week actually so can wait until after the Easter Holiday. I do plan to bring my resume with me and if I can get a job would love to stay! Thanks for the links speee1dy!
you are welcome-good luck and have fun
If you can sell, I know of an immediate job opening with a major media company. But you have to really be able to sell.
It would help if you tell us if you have already submitted resumes, how you submitted resumes, where you submitted, and what was the outcome. Nobody wants to waste time referring someone to sources they have already tried.
There's an Admin job for a major insurance company listed in the St Croix Avis. They want someone with insurance experience. Unfortunately Avis is not online.
I'd say, with resume in hand, to hit the streets. Back in the '90's I was managing an office and a young recent arrival to island whose husband came as a pilot, was going door to door asking if any openings. I had just given my month's notice the day before and the owner hired her on the spot and I got to spend time training her before I left.
I have not yet sent any resumes. It seems like a better idea to go in person. My background is in law firms in the private and government sectors, but I'm smart, great with people and computers, and super organized and open to a new industry too.
The recruiter websites don't have very many ads at all but the law directory shows 71 law firms on island. Hard to tell if those are all full time, or semi-retired lawyers? I will do some in person visits and see what kind of response I get. Also thinking about court system, governmental entities, hospital and college?
Any leads much appreciated and feel free to PM me if you prefer. Thank you all!
There is a huge number of law firms here, that's for sure.
Just send a resume and for govt jobs you can usually start the application process online.
You might wish to pick up a local VI phone book to take home with you.
You can get at Innovative Office. Not sure where that's located in STX as I live on STT. They're free and a good resource.

Where everything else is on STX, Sunny Isle- or thereabouts

If you really want to stay, a lot of people pick up jobs waitressing, etc. until they find their "forever" job. You may have to work two jobs at first. Just sayin' ......Depends on how bad you want to stay!
Good luck, and WELCOME!
