After calling many real estate agencys I have narrowed down to apartments, one is in Red Hook, and one is near Frenchtown, which of these areas is safer, which has less crime. I have asked both real estate companies but both of them are saying the area they are selling the studio is in is safer, so I am looking for an unbiased opinion. Thanks

Red Hook is great. I havent been in french town really so couldnt tell you about it. Red Hook has lots or places to go all in a very small area and feels very safe. The ferry to St. John is right here, lots of great places to eat and I think about 14 bars at last count! Its all in an area of about 1/4 of a mile so very easy to get around. Also a great little market here too. There has been and will be crime here, but I think that walking around at around 4 in the morning anywhere can be a bad idea. So far this is the only area where I have felt safe enough to walk around at night. And im sure I'll get flak for that too...My opions have caused a rucus on this board before.

Hi again
St. John, in my opinion, is a much more country type setting, and much safer than anywhere in St. thomas. I go there as often as i can, the beaches are great and people seem to be ....happier. ( im really trying to be careful with my wording here people...)
The only famous peaple I know that did live here are John Mcvie from fleetwood mac had a house in Red hook- confirmed by the owners of "Rhiannons" gift shop in red hook, - check out the picture of Stevie Nicks on the wall with the locals!(hey a plug! ) and the daughter of Openheimer, who invented the atomic bomb ( thats probly not even close to the right spelling) in St. John. She commited suicide and left the house to " the people of st. John" according to various sorces. I have heard of a few people coming through. Jimmy Buffet was just here for thanksgiving, Debbie Gibson was here for her sisters wedding at the Ritz, Jon Bon Jovi was here, Kid Rock, a country singer that i cant rember his name, kenny something, is here alot- goes to duffys alot ive heard. Suger Ray leonard is still here i think, hes been here for some boxing promotional stuff. I dont know whos boat that is off the harbor right now down town but they must be famous, that thing is incredible looking! Its a huge yacht called Georgia. Well, anyway, St. John is great. Red Hook is nice, hope all works out for you.

Hello,

Red Hook is a large area and near Frenchtown covers a large area... do you get to look at both places before deciding??? Whats the actual address? For a young family w/child I would say a nice place in Red Hook would be better - but it depends on the exact location of the place and the place itself. St. John is good - commuting everyday - well depends on where you live on St. John and where you work on St. Thomas. My sister worked at the Westin on St. John a few years back and lived on St. Thomas - she found the drive, park, early ferry (whch sometimes was full with commuters so she had to wait for the next one), ferry ride, wait for ride or take taxi to Westin, then everything in reverse just to be a big pain - it didn't work out for her - but others do it daily- depends on the person and the distance; ie if you are working at say the airport or uvi on St. Thomas and live in say Coral Bay area of St. John the commute will be quite long- so if you end up living on St. John make sure to keep the commute time in mind so its not overwhelming.

Well I have been to both places but not at night and i wasnt sure how safe they were. We are moving because my husband loves it here(from vacations). I have decided on Red Hook, because in the case of an emergency(medical) STT would be a much better place to be.
