Island Transportation
Before I ask my question, I just want to thank all you folks who make this site possible, it has been a big help for all of us "main land" residents who are planning a move to the VI. Thank you!
My boyfriend and I are planning to move to the Islands in July. We first thought about St. John, and after further research we are thinking that St. Thomas may be a better fit as far as amenities being closer and less inconvienient. Any comments?
We do not want to ship our car down right away, we were questioning other modes of transportation. We were thinking that a moped may be an alternative choice. Are mopeds common on the island? Would a moped get us by for getting to work, grocery, etc. Do they have moped dealerships on the island, if so what are the price ranges? Are there moped rental places that sell used mopeds? Any advice? Thanks a bunch!

Hello Brittany,
Thank you for the comments about the site & board. 🙂
St. Thomas or St. John; some like both, some like one more then the other. St. Thomas is larger with more stores/doctors/options. St. John is seen as way more laid back... however St. Thomas has laid back areas too. St. John real estate is more expensive. From St. Thomas, St. John is just a short ferry ride away. Its a matter of personal choice/perference. What are you looking for?
A moped is ok, a few people use them for transportation. Some hills would be impossiable to climb with a moped after a rain shower, some might be impossiable or tough with more then one person on it. It also wouldn't work very well for groceries unless you were only shopping for a little bit each time. You can buy mopeds from the scooter rental places like Biz Scooter and Tropical Scooter.
Many that don't have cars use buses & $1 rides.

Hi Brittney,
My boyfriend and I are also moving to St Thomas, but not until late September- early October. I would love to keep in touch with you and hear how everything goes for you. I have the same questions about transportation, but with the research I have done it seems like a very expensive thing to do (especially right away when you have all of your moving costs) But the thought of a moped on a hill type road doesn't seem like a good idea either! We plan on using public transportation and then possibly buying a car when we are settled on the island. Anyway, I'd love to know more about how things go for you and I'd love to keep in touch and maybe know someone on the island when we arrive! I also was wondering if you know anything about renting a furnished apartment over there, for that is most likely what we are going to end up doing... How about you? Well, I hope to hear from you! 🙂
