Since I will (hopefully) be taking a management postiion at one of the hotels, I started wondering. How does island time work when managing employees and attendance. Are tardiness policies less strict? Where I am now, 7 minutes late is a tardy and 7 of them will cost you your job.

They will probably start you with an in depth look at the V.I. Labor Laws and the Wrongful Discharge Act... Not sure if lateness is a firing infraction...

Hello John,

You should read/review the Labor Laws East Ender mentioned, you can contact the Labor Dept. for that.

It isn't called island time at work, it's inefficiencies on the part of employees/staff and poor management overall.

In general you can expect some tardiness. There are some places that allow people to be late, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, an hour... and others that will send you home without pay for the day if you are late 10 minutes or more. There are some employees that are on the job religiously when needed and when requested. The bad situation as the manager is when you enter a work enviroment where the slackers were allowed to be slack by previous management; it is very difficult to change things.

Good Luck.
