Island hopping tricks
One of the really cool things that we can do by living in STX is hop to other islands from time to time. I went to St. Maarten (SXM) a few months ago and at times felt like I had travelled to Europe, it was wonderful to be 45 minutes away (by plane) and experience such a different culture.
I'm not sure if anyone else has every started a thread like this, I haven't seen one yet, but it may be useful to have an island hopping tricks thread where we can exchange info about good, affordable hotels and air travel deals for those who want to getaway for the weekend.
So I'll begin by saying that I've got the urge to get some good Dutch Heineken this weekend back on SXM (they sell the dutch lager there vs the US Pilsner version...the Dutch version is my favorite beer in the world). I was going to head over Saturday morning and return Saturday evening (have some American miles to burn). Any thoughts on a good, cheap, and affordable place to rest my head for the night or a good deal on a rental? I may be heading over with 3 friends so a place that sleeps 4 would be ideal.

Hey Sean,
I like your idea about this thread, but unfortunately I have no information to add.
But.... it gave me an idea that I'm sure many others have had:
- there's lots of good information that gets published in these threads (like hurricane preparations)
- but, the blog/forum format is a horrible way to catalog information
- I wonder if there are public "cataloging" sites that would be worth pursuing
- I think it's basically a wiki - is that right? If so, should we start a USVI wiki somewhere?
- I'm sure a wiki can get trashed, and get bad info, out of date info, etc, but I wonder if it's worth just trying?
- are there other ways we could catalog info?
That's a good idea. I have a "virtual server" web host that has plenty of space and bandwidth on it that I could use to host such a thing...I'd just have to find the time to set it all up.
FWIW I never made it to SXM. There were 4 of us who wanted to go and only one seat available to SJU on Saturday morning. We could've done Liat etc. but there were alterior motives for wanting to hop on Eagle (I have an AAirpass so it would've been very cheap). We may try again on 12/6 weekend. Looks like ace rental car on SXM is very cheap ($45 for 2 days) and the Sonesta was affordable at $115 on priceline.

Does anyone have any information on Antigua? Going there for thanksgiving and wanted to know what to avoid or see.
Shirley Heights on Sundays, Devil's Bridge, Half Moon Bay, English Harbour, Jumby Bay. Be careful, there is a lot of crime and it is not reported because of the tourism industry.
Thanks Sabrina.......Was't it Antigua where the honey mooners were recently murdered? she was a dr.
where isnt the crime getting bad? just going over for a quick look around.
Yes it is. Murders aren't so common though, just lots of assaults, rapes and robberies. Look out for yourself. A few years ago a B.A. Flight Attendant got raped on a small hotel beach that had a Security Guard (what was he doing at the time?) Overall it is a nice island though, managed to retain it's culture pretty well.
Great thread. One thing people on STX often overlook is Puerto Rico. It's an entire other world with lots to do and see, and it's only a 35 minute Sea Plane flight away. One can easily do a weekend in San Juan without even renting a car.
Only assaults, rapes and robberies - wow!...but murders not so common? Sign me up!
Hello there:
This is a great thread. St. Martin/St. Maarten is a great place to explore and US VI is also a great place from which to island hop and explore the Caribbean. On St. Martin, there is a beautiful butterfly farm on the north coast (if my memory serves me correctly) that any visitor should see. Like another poster said, Puerto Rico is another great place to see, the San Cristobal Fort in Old San Juan, and the El Yunke? (spelling) Forest. Great places to see and great food, which also includes seafood!
Then there is Guadeloupe (which is French) but another great place to see and explore and those beaches on the north shore. The forest and Soufriere volcano on the western side of this butterfly shaped island.
Use this link to research more islands and things to do there. Remember, use common sense when traveling, because they are the islands, that doesn't mean that you should do things which you wouldn't do at home. Travel smart!!
