Is it reasonable to live on one island and work on another? The company that I am accepting a position with is on St. Thomas but I hear that St. Croix has a better housing selection. Is a commute even possible or worth while?

St Croix is probably not an option. It's 40 miles to St Thomas. The only real possibility is if you fly your own plane. St Croix is a very nice island.

Hello Richard,

Like Ric mentioned this sort of commute is not common although it does happen. In terms of the USVI many people live on St. Thomas and commute to St. John. OR live on Water Island and commute to St. Thomas. Very few commute between residences on St. Thomas or St. Croix to jobs on one of the same two islands. In fact very few people say island hop for the day from say St. Thomas to St. Croix because of the distance.

Having said that yes people do commute but not everyday. Business people might go over for 3 or 4 days for meetings. Or memeber of legislature might go back and forth when necessary. And some doctors or lawyers or private business folks who have businesses on both islands sometimes will go over to the other islands office maybe once a week to see how things are going - but usually they just higher someone to run the show for them.

So in my opinion No working on St. Thomas and commuting to St. Croix where your residence is, is NOT reasonable. The Cost you save in terms of housing on St. Croix will be eaten up in transportation between the two islands. The ferry is around $55-60 last I checked and Seaplane runs between $99 and say $150.

Paul,

All the ferry schedules and time tables, telephone numbers and cost and time it takes are listed on this site on one page.

http://vinow.com/general_usvi/interisland_ferry/ thats the link OR go to the home page http://www.vinow.com and select from Frequently Asked Questions the topic Ferry Schedules.

The two you want are there under St. Thomas - Water Island and St. Thomas- BVI...
