So what are the local food everyone here should try and get to know? Someone recommended to us Jonny cakes (sp)

As I am cooking dinner, (yes this early we have campany coming) I was thinking what would I have cooked if I lived on St Croix already?

We are having lambroast, green beans, baked polenta and new potatoes. Chocolate covered cherries and pecan pie for dessert.

Uh, Iris, I don't know what local cuisine you will be dishing up when you move down here, but you are more than welcome to come to our house and cook! Chocolate covered cherries?! Yum!

You buy the food and some great red wine and I am there. I was a chef in my past life. 😉
I eager to try out all the new produce I never have cooked with. I might even try and grow some vanilla orchids. It's my favorid flavor. StX is a perfect place to grow that.

Iris,

You should really put up a warning in the title of any post in which you describe what you're cooking so food lovers who might already be hungry or missing certain foods know to proceed with caution. My stomach let out a slow growl after moments after reading your fabulous menu for tonight!

Looks like it's time to go bug Kelly about what we're going to do for dinner now that we know stairs are going to keep us from our preferred plan of having a lovely meal with friends from this board down at Breezez.

Please tell your guests tonight that there are a lot of your new island friends who are living vicariously through their tastebuds tonight. :?)

Oh Iris!

Your menu sounds wonderful! I can not tell my family or they will leave me and come live with you as we are having Hamburger Helper tonight!!!

SInce you are a good cook, you might want to start off with red conk chowder, some Old Wife (awsome fish) , lightly blacked, fresh greenbeens sauted in garlic and butter and for dessert - how about some fresh mangos or keylime pie! It is much better in the islands than on the mainland!!!!!

Iris- I'm not sure how to cook it, but I love Salt fish! I've had it prepared to go on crakers, stewed over rice, and by itself. I noticed that virginbound mentioned stewed goat, which is wonderful. There is this little place in STT that makes "Goat Water" which is like a goat soup and I fell in love with that, don't forget the Johnny Cakes. Conk Creole at "Victors Hideout" in St. Thomas is m'm...m'm good! All of the food mentioned above goes great with an ice cold Caribe..don't forget the lime.

Yea, 11 weeks until we relocate to St. Thomas...too long if you ask me!

OH NOOOOOO I came from there. My parents are still in the business and I was a pro chef for over 10 years. I went back to school and never looked back lol. I rather sit on the other side if you know what I mean. My husband told me I should be a consultant for Restaurants and hotels.

Not to brag but the September issue of Popular Photography is out and I am featured.
So can I still come live on STX????
