Island Crime
I know this has been a topic talked about on several posts, however I still have some questions. Here is a little about me. I currently live in Seattle, WA and work in law enforcement. I have visited both STX and STT (as a tourist). My family and I are seriously thinking about moving down to the islands however are concerned about the crime rates. I know I look at these issues differently because that is what I do for a living. I have read several posts on crime that raises some questions.
How much violent crime (homicides, shootings, assaults) is in the USVI and which island has higher crime rates?
Where on what island(s) tends to be the problem areas?
Is it safe to raise a family with young children in the USVI?
I'll leave it with these three questions for now, I really want some "un-sugar coated" answers on what you think. I realized crime is everywhere and I work in a city where shootings happen every night. I just want to know from current residents their feeling on crime in the USVI.
Thanks in advance!
"How much violent crime (homicides, shootings, assaults) is in the USVI and which island has higher crime rates?"
More than most of us would like. You can research USVI crime statistics online. You can also find past posts about crime using the search feature on this message board.
"Where on what island(s) tends to be the problem areas?"
It depends on the type of crime i.e. housing projects have more domestic violence, beaches have more theft, nights have more violent crime than days, etc.
"Is it safe to raise a family with young children in the USVI?"
Many of us feel safe doing so; others feel unsafe doing so and return to the states.
You'll know problem areas when you're here. Crime can happen in any area but parts of downtown Charlotte Amalie you'd best stay out of late at night but really there'd be no reason to be there anyway. Plenty of familes are very happy here but it's expensive in some ways raising children when you consider the cost of just milk, etc. as well as if you want your children in private schools but you'd probably save on clothing expenses & the children do get a taste of other cultures.
Read the Daily News or the Source online. Many (I'd say most) shootings are retaliatory or drug-related or what they used to call crimes of passion.

On STT, I don't mean to single out downtown. Parts of Nadir or Bovoni and Smith Bay can be high-risk but nowhere is 100% same as elsewhere on the mainland. Common sense is your friend.
