I was thinking of getting myself a nice or maybe not so nice island car. This raises a few questions.
1.) What is required of me when I purchase privately? Is
licensing any different than getting a new registration?
2.) Liability insurance. I'm a 24 year old male, clean driving
record, no accidents and have never even been
pulled over! (Amazing, right?) Anyone want to give or at
least try to give me a rough estimate on a monthly payment
on, say, a ten year old car? Suggestions on where to buy?
3.) Lastly, any advice? What should I watch out for or be weary
of?

1. When you purchase a privately owned used vehicle you will have the current registration signed over to you and duly notarized. Get a Bill of Sale also. If the vehicle's owner does not have the title you'll need to get that also, although best to check with DMV because they seem to change this ruling rather frequently and when I bought an island car a few weeks ago it wasn't necessary! You will also need to have your own insurance for the vehicle in hand and then take the paperwork to DMV - along with a copy of the seller's driver's license and your own driver's license (this is a brand new requirement) so that the registration can be transferred to you.
2. Check around for rates but I've used Theodore Tunick and Company for many years and have always found them most reasonable and very professional. A full year's insurance premium must be paid for up front (no "monthly" deals.)
3. Unless you're a mechanical whizz, have the car checked prior to purchase by a good mechanic. It'll cost you about $50 but is well worth the expense and will save you a lot of future headaches and angst. If and when you get to that point, feel free to PM me and I can steer you in the direction of my mechanic who's a gem.

Thanks STT resident... I am sorry, I should've added that I'm on STX. Great info though! I really do appreciate it. I think I may wait a bit and keep to walking for now. Keeps the heart rate up! ; )

Hello there. I am in about the same position as you are, but for different reasons. I already have a basically new truck, Mazda American B2300 with about 35,00 highway miles from South Carolina. I will be selling that for around 9K, but looking to get an island car that is smaller and automatic.
I am disabled, and can no longer handle the clutch and shifting.
Question: If you hear of a decent 'island car' dealership on STX could you let me know? I am in no rush, but it would certainly help. Due to my driving situation, I do not get out a lot, so I have not been able to scout around.

Hello there. I have read everyone's posts on both selling and buying vehicles on St. Croix (and STT for that matter!). I think I have the list of things to do one I have my island car as I can no longer drive my truck due to my legs.
Question: When I have all of the paperwork in hand and I go to the STX motor vehicles, does ANYONE know if the change of registration occurs upstairs or in the parking lot below?
When I registered my truck, I was sent all over the place and was nearly crawling by the time I found the correct spot to stand to wait. Any 'experienced buyers' who could point me in the right direction will save a tremendous amount of physical pain.
