Is this a good idea? STX question
This is a visitor question but I figured the locals could answer it better. If there happens to be a cruise ship in port, is it ok to drive from Christiansted to Fredricksted? I do not mind crowds and think it would be neat to see what all is going on when a cruise ship is in port, so I was mainly conserned about parking and traffic..
Fredericksted on cruise-ship day?? Absolutely!!! We stay on island a coupla weeks each year, stay in C'sted but make a point of getting over to F'sted at least once if not more on cruise ship days. The island really rolls out the red carpet and there's tons o'fun to be had. Shows in the market square and blocks of what is actually good flea-market souvenirs (as opposed to cheap / throwaway, tourist junk), Be decadent and stop at the Los Angeles Cafe BEFORE noon and order a ten-dollar Dirty Banana - it sounds like a steep price but with the amount of alcohol in it they're probably just about breaking even 🙂 and you'll be set for the day. Also stop by the tent with the guy that is selling books & t-shirts, he was a jail corrections officer for 30 years and however much time you have, he can fill it with great stories about the island. (Our favorite shirt: A picture of 3 guys playing island-made instruments - I forget what they're called at the moment - with the caption "Pleh De Music Mon! Pleh De Music!" If you don't buy one there's something wrong with you).
When are you going to be on island? We'll be there between 12/24 and 1/11, if you need a semi-local guide just drop a line.

Bob n' Karen,
Where do you park?
Thanks.

It's not congested like St. Thomas. You might find parking on King St and there's a parking lot behind of the playground, across from the Fort.
Thank you everyone for the responses! And Bob n Karen, we will be there in March so not sure if you will be back then. Also, this will be a Sunday when the ship comes in and we will already be familiar with C'sted by then so it might be nice to get out of there for a bit during the cruise docking times. So we are definitely going and the banana drink sounds yummy and will make sure to look for the tshirts! LOL - Oh and Cruz thank you for the parking tips. I google earthed that area and it looks like a pretty big parking lot across from the fort so I'm sure there are no worries. OK, I will stop spamming the relocation forum with visitor questions 🙂
Burris--
We were wanting to go down to F'sted when a cruise ship came in this past June and were wondering the same questions you are. We were staying out east on that trip. We drove down to Frederiksted and parked along the waterfront, then walked up the sidewalk to where everything was happening. Very easy. Totally enjoyed ourselves! We've never been on a cruise or been down to the dock when a ship came in so we didn't know what to expect. There were a couple of bands playing, several shops open, strings of open air booths set up to wander through, lots of people strolling around, sitting on the benches, touring the fort, etc. We followed the crowd as if we were from the ship and picked up some things to bring home to grandchildren. It was such a pretty day, with a nice breeze that we ended up getting a drink and sat on a bench for quite a while just people watching while the music played in the background. All in all, we totally enjoyed ourselves 🙂
Thank you, Paula! It sounds like even a better idea now! Can't wait for it!
