is there work for me in St Thomas?
I have been a portrait photographer in NYC for the past 18 years, and now hope to relocate to St Thomas. Is there any need for a portrait photographer, or is it possible to start a business as a freelance photographer? Are there photo studios, and or a need for photographers on the island?
I started my career working for airlines and Club Med,... always in customer service, and then on to photography.
As long as I am around people, sun and have a camera, I am happy... Is it possible to do this in St Thomas? And earn a living?
Thank you very much
Denise
Denise: I know of one photographer who does a lot of portrait work, but I think that weddings are pretty much the bread and butter of photography. There are underwater photographers and artsy photographers, there is even a photographer who posts to this board!
Thank you so much for responding to my post... This is all new for me, and I am not sure if I am dreaming... I have been photograhing actors and corporate execs... although.. not in the typical boring studio setting... my portraits are very alive.
I am much more of a "people" photographer than a wedding photographer, so I may have to try and "start" something different.... hahahha.... I will be coming to St Thomas on the 26th of Mar ... very exciting and inspiring...
I would love to talk to the photographer that posts on the board, can you tell me how to find him or her? I am new to the message board, but from what I can see... St. Thomas has very nice, helpful people.... I am looking forward to coming down...
I appreciate your time... thank you 😉
Denise
Hello Denise,
You can find work here as a photographer but you will have to become less focused I suppose... many photographers here do multiple forms of photography work; weddings are big as mentioned, freelance, work for the Daily Newspaper as a reporter-photographer, own a photography shop doing id pictures and portraits in studio while also doing prom pictures and weddings on location, some do pictures of scenery and try to sell it to tourist type magazines. Some do postcards, books and calendars with their work while also doing weddings. A few are underwater photographers in addition to doing other forms of photography.
You might visit the Photograpy Association web site to get a little info on what photographers here are doing - there is a short bio and links for the members.
Coming down for a pre-move visit is a great idea!!
