Is St Thomas safe?
How is crime there? What sort of crime occurs? What places are the worst?
Do I really have to fear being out at night?
There are tons of prior posts on this topic so I won't go into details here. My opinion is that exercising common sense is enough to keep you safe. Don't keep anything valuable in sight in your unattended car. Don't go walking around most areas at night. Don't do/buy/sell drugs. Etc.
I've lived here for over ten years (from Detroit) and I haven't had one problem....didn't even lock my door in my last apartment for 7 /2 years...use your head, you'll be fine.
I second te statements above. You need to take responsibility and don't put yourself is the wrong position, like being on back street at 2am.
There are places thyat are very, very safe. I would suggest you rent at one of the major complexes like Sapphie, Sugar Bay etc.

Living at Sugar Bay would get a little pricey. 😀
I have never felt unsafe on any of the Virgin Island as a vistor or a resident. I do not engage in risky behavior and use common sense.
Honestly for the few months that i have been here STT is probably safer that allot of cities in the Mainland US like Miami, Detroit and smaller cities like New Orleans etc.. Exercise common sense don't get into anything that is " questionable" like dealing with people that do and sell drugs or people that are related to that. Since i have been here i have seen the police and Federal authorities really hitting crime in a big way my neighbor that has been living in the island for over 25 years he said that now he feels more safer than before. You are going to get allot of perspective on this there are allot of people here that are going to tell you about their crime experiences but there is no alarm living in STT is like living in any other cosmopolitan city with influx of travelers and tourist so there is always a risk of crime but some people make it worst than it really is.
I wasn't really talking about dark alleys - of course that's a dopey idea. But anywhere I've ever lived in the states I was able to walk around my neighborhood, town, etc, at any time of the day/night.
Ok, compared to the mainland in general, would you say there is more crime and less safety in St Thomas?
Thanks
David, Our neighborhoods aren't like stateside, for the most part. We don't have "blocks", and most neighbors aren't that easily accessible. What I mean by that is your next door neighbor might be down the hill and up the next hill, or something like that. I have seen more traditional type neighborhoods on STX than on STT, but not too many near commercial areas. So, you don't walk over to your buddy's house and pick him up and then keep walking "uptown" to a restaurant or shops, etc. On St. Thomas, you can do that in Red Hook or maybe Frenchtown, just west of downtown Charlotte Amalie.
Thanks Juanita... I'll be coming down soon so I'll be able to get a feel for it myself.
