Re: moving to St. Thomas in Feb. Are there ample jobs in the food service industry - say for a 24 year old woman with restaurant and cashiering experience? What about finding roommates? Is there a central source people use to hook up with others? Do the usual US health plans usually work there - ie Blue Cross? Thanks for all the help you can give.

"Re: moving to St. Thomas in Feb. Are there ample jobs in the food service industry - say for a 24 year old woman with restaurant and cashiering experience?"
-Yes, shouldn't be a problem finding something.

"What about finding roommates?"
-Check the Island Trader. Always someone looking. Or post a new topic here stating when you will be here and you can proably find somene coming at the same time.

"Is there a central source people use to hook up with others?"
-Nope...just the Trader and this board....or at the bar! haha!

"Do the usual US health plans usually work there - ie Blue Cross?"
-Yes, they do.

Hello Cheryl,

You should be able to find work in February. Keep in mind that high season slows down in late April/May and then slows down more in Aug-Oct... picks up again in late Nov/early Dec. So should you be working at a restaurant and tips seem great for the first few months plan ahead for the slow months. Cashier.... sales? You can find work downtown in the various jewerly stores and boutiques. If you do and work on commission - same as above applies.

Some doctors will have you pay up front and fill out your forms for you to deal with getting reimbursed yourself. When you call to make appointments ask whether your insurance is excepted. Just to be sure, you might call your insurance company and ask whether you will be reimbursed for medical expeditures in the USVI. I know it sounds weird but you just never know. Better to know this type of stuff rather then be caught off guard when you really do need it.

Insurance companies need to be licensed in the USVI. Many places will ask for cash up front with insurance (except for VI government insurance.) Blue Cross has many faces, you really should have local insurance if you are planning on using local health care.

"The Island Trader" is a free local paper that comes out every Thursday. It's got classifieds in it ranging from apartments, to cars, to house sales, you name it.
