Is It Pretty Easy To Find A Bartending Job In STT?

Will be heading down there the week of Oct. 10th.

Will be there in September for 6 days in over Labor Day to "scope" out the Island. I have a friend that lives on the East End near Red Hook and has been on the Island for almost 2 years now, so I will be staying with him.

I am going to take bartender classes this summer so I can get my license this summer, have done very little bartending, so pretty much inexperienced. Have a very outgoing personality and I am fairly intellegent with common sense, so learing on the go won't be a problem.

My question is, will all the bartending jobs be taken up by then?

Bartending jobs are fairly fluid from turnover - experience does count - there are rum and coke and beer joints which need less experience - fancy cocktail and expensive creations type bars need more experience and some local following - hotel jobs are easier to get but local drinkers tip better - some shifts are way better than others at the same place - take whatever you can get to start and keep looking for a position that fits. Oct is slow.

I suggest that you line up everything when you come down. Tell them what you are doing and what you want. Line up transportation, housing etc. Then determine where you want a job. The east end has more opportunitiues than town for bar tending jobs. But there are more people looking for a job. Stay away from the lesser locations.

Remember that October is still the off season. Things don't get hot until mid-November.

Good Luck.

Thanks Bill. (tu)

I have the housing and transportation lined up because of my buddy who has been living there for almost 2 years now. He told me it is easier to find a job there once I have finally made the move and get out and start meeting people and networking. I am going to be there for 6 days in the beginning of September, about a month before I make my move. I want to try and get to meet and network with as many people in that short time that I can to make things a little easier when I do move.

The trip in September won't get to be 6 days of fun for me it appears, it is going to be more research, fact finding, and networking in hopes of landing a job in October.

Thanks again for the replies guys, I appreciate all the help you guys offer on this board.

I think you research in September will be good. Doubt it will land you a job as those jobs are filled as needed. The turnover is big, so employers have no idea what they will need in a month. At least you can feel your way around and see what you like. Hint. Late night bartenders make more money as they cater to like service staff who tip generously after their shifts! Get your food handlers card in September, as they are always the first to get jobs with card in hand. Have a social security card when you go get it though as it's needed for ID around here although illegal.

Your food handlers card is a Requirement for any restaurant job - available almost daily at the SRMC if on STT from 1 -3 PM if you have submitted a stool sample a day ahead.

Hello Again, Really? A stool sample? What kind? A bar stool? Sorry but it sounds funny. Seriously, What's the SRMC and where do you give a sample? Thanks, WGAF

On STT - Schneider Regional Medical Center - aka 'the hospital' - you can drop your sample at the lab there or do it at a private lab and bring the paperwork.

Best way is to go to Cranston -Dottiin lab in the Medical Arts Complex early in the morning and drop off your sample[le. Pick up the results midday and then go to the hospital to finish the job. They offer it from 1-2:45. They stop at 3 but don't take any after 2:45. Make sure you have your SS card as well. Stand behind the line until called.
