Is Crime in STX really that bad?
I think one has to be more careful.
I built security gates for both my sea side sliders so we can keep the sliders open all the time to catch the winds, and around the entrance patio on the parking side of our condo.
Could someone still get in? Yes, I'm sure they could, but why not break into to the condos on either side who have no security. I also installed a small safe that I keep our money and documents in that is bolted to the floor.
I have two wallets, one I carry and bring from the states, and another for the island. In the island one, at night, I carry my one credit card, drivers license, and large bills in another pocket. I keep in the wallet some of those phony credit cards you get it the mail as advertisements and a few ones. Overkill, I hope so.
On my car, I installed a hidden fuel pump switch that can be deactivated when exiting the car without anyone noticing. I have this in my car on the mainland as well. This won't prevent a car jacking, but they won't get very far. I also have a hidden switch that has to be pressed before the car will start. It bypasses the starter system and can't be jumped around. I also built a large hidden compartment where I can store my jumper cables, cameras, wallet, and etc when at the beach.
I would rather be safe than sorry. Am I paranoid? Maybe, but after reading so much about the crime, well...
The only people I know who have been a target of crime on the island, to my knowledge, was Linda J and Ric when they were at the bar when it was held up.
Just for clarification, I do not work in law enforcement. . .just have a similar uniform. . .lucky I guess.
Tammy,
As a fed wife I can tell you why they don't bother hiding it. There is no point. The crooks know who he is and who I am. The big crooks do not target us because it will bring the media and the weight of the Federal Govt down on them. They want to continue business as usual and make money.
Any fed worth his salt can usually avoid or disfuse a situation with a small time crook when out and about. They are trained very well for it. But if you're number is up its up.
My husband job stateside would be completely undercover and he would have to lie about what he does, etc... But you can't hide on these islands. He by no means broadcast it, he's always evasive or vague when people he does not know ask's him where he works.I remember when we were newly married and was shocked to learn that the large criminal group where we were had pictures of him and everyone he worked with and their families. These guys really put their lives on the line for us.
You are right Betty, all these men and women who serve in law enforcement including coast guard and military put themselves in harms way every day to protect us all. I am for one very proud and appreciative of all the men and women who serve. My point was that the families of these men and women should not post on a public forum about a family member who serves in that capacity in order not to put them or the rest of their family in harms way. An example. Say for instance my husband was a DEA agent and some pretty high up drug dealers were mad at him and me being Miss chatterbox posted on the stx today thread that hubby JJ and I were going sailing on our boat next weekend. We could just disappear and no one would be the wiser. Probably the coast guard might look for us for a while.
This is just my opinion and how I was raised so maybe I should have never commented at all. I feel so uncomfortable talking about it that I am not going to post or respond about the subject anymore.
To all of you that serve and protect, thank you very much.
Tam
Tammy yer missing the point, they already know where I live and what I look like and they know about those other women.
They could easily find any of us. But I would never go anywhere like a beach alone either, thats just dangerous no matter who you are. I don't give anyone information about where I live other then east, or where I work or where I go or even my real name but thats to protect me from regular crazies not crooks. I would never post any of that stuff anywhere, but I'm of an age that grew up with computers. There are always hackers that can find out anything they want to but why make it easy for them?
The high up crooks are not like you see in the movies, they are not stupid, you don't get high up by being stupid. Its business. You don't try to kill a vendor when he takes his business elsewhere, even though it costs you money, you get new business. The drug business makes alot of money, there are even theorys about them letting the feds catch something every once in a while to let bigger ones pass by, etc... Its all so complicated what they do and how they do it, it shocks most people. Believe me they are much much much much much much much more like to kill their own then any fed or cop in cold blood (meaning not in the heat of battle so to speak).
