Plans have not changed for us. We'll be transferring status from part timers to full timers at some point this year or early next. Our business is conducted through internet and the USPS. Now if USPS pulls up stakes . . . .

Now if USPS pulls up stakes . . . .

Is that actually being discussed with any seriousness anywhere? Alarming.

Of course it's not.

Actually, Tart you are badly mistaken. Post office closing are being discussed by the US Senate in Washington today:

Up for elimination are non-profitable locations and Saturday delivery among other services.

blu4u: I'm well aware of what's going on with USPS services. I was responding to the comment about the USPS pulling up stakes here period. Of course there may be cutbacks but I've not yet heard of any plans to set up either a homing pigeon or an albatross training facility here to take care of our future mailing needs.

The proposed legislation does not allow the USPS to stop providing postal delivery services. ie...they can't pull up stakes. This is actually enshrined in the founding postal legislation.

It DOES allow them to reasonably consolidate locations.

And it does allow them to keep an unprofitable location open if the local community can demonstrate the importance of the center to the community.

Sorry. It was a joke with respect to the looming USPS bankruptcy. I promise to add a smiley next time.

Thanks for your enthusiasm and positivity, Jah.

My husband and I are moving down. The Hovensa closure isn't putting us off at all. We own an internet business that we can run from anywhere. So hopefully, we can bring some prosperity with us. If things go well, we may even be able to create some jobs!

And personally, I hate air conditioners. And Wal-Mart. 😀

My drive to work in the early morning hours (7:30ish on ME highway) and the traffic is minimal. Perhaps it's my imagination, but the streets and traffic are bare frequently. I know the snowbirds are gone, but sometimes it just feels creepy driving on the roads with so few cars .. I hope I'm not the last one left here 😉 Is anyone else staying?

Keeping up with the positive energy and attitude...

my husband and I are moving next week to STX. We are excited for our new life and are not deterred by the economy or Hovensa closure. It might be difficult in the beginning, but doesn't mean we can't try.

hopefully in a few years, after we're more settled, we (my husband) can start his own business... giving back to the community we're living in.

I've truly enjoyed reading about your journey here, what an awesome adventure. My husband and I would love to show you around the island if you'd like. We'd love to meet you both, and your sweet pup.

jwidjaja - As avid STX lovers (and students who have been visiting/studying for years), and wannabe residents (before we can't remember our names due to early-onset dementia), we too are on-island next week.. Having followed your trip with awe and humility, we too would love to meet you; share a smile, and at least shake your hands. 🙂

If there are any potential 'welcoming events' at a nearby mooring which may be dreamt up by someone/anyone, please let us know. 🙂

STXJill and nadirfend,

we would love to meet you!! I don't think there would be any "welcoming event" but once we get there we'll PM you to get together. We'd love to meet as many people to show us around and hopefully can help answer our questions.

We are glad you have enjoyed our stories and adventure, words of encouragement always help especially when we're having writer's block 😛

Thanks again for the offer, and we hope to meet you soon.

Everything is going pretty well for me now and I'm not going anywhere. I think my moving here at the time I did (right before Hovensa closed), was a blessing, because a lot of doors have opened for me that wouldn't have before.

Almost four years and counting on STX. Only way I'm leaving will be on a fiery boat pushed out to sea... Screw the ecology. :}

That's what I'm talkin about.....positive energy! Keep sending it my way. Ironic Novanut, I just quit my job as a firefighter. I'm hoping that'll be the only way I leave as well!

And when the time comes, please make sure a large woman wearing a crown of horns named: "Helga" does the pushing...

Late to the party, but we're not going anywhere either.

And since our business is based in the States, we make our money in the States and bring it here and spend it here. I shop locally as much as possible. 😎 I think more people are figuring out how to work remotely as well - it's a growing method of being employed.

I also believe that the island is much more positive now that Hess/Hovensa is gone. It's like a cloud lifted in some ways. The economic fall-out has been tough, and will continue to be, but all we can do is continue to be positive and think creatively and support each other. I love what I'm doing and our life here is wonderful, despite the challenges.

In the end, life is what we think it is. What I think it is is pretty darn good. 🙂
