Yet another car question... The car I have was a gift donation...I payed only a dollar for it...I'm thinking that I don't have to pay the Bill of Sale Tax on it...is this a correct assumption? If no one knows the answer does anyone have the phone number for the IRB??? Thanks again all

It is a ROAD TAX, has nothing to do with purchase price, has to do with the vehicle weight.

That is right. And the rate recently increased from 11 cents per pound to 16. For a typical midsized car, you are probably looking at around $300-400.

Hello Juni,

I think your question and the answers have two fees/taxes mixed up.

IRB collects Road Tax which goes by weight as mentioned.

The Customs Office which is at the shipping dock area collects duty on Non-US cars. And that fee is 3.5% of the Book Value or the Bill of Sale which ever is greater on cars made outside the U.S. or cars that contain foreign made parts. So if you paid $1 the book value will be more so you will have to pay this fee.

Is your car a US car?

The number for IRB is (340)774-7870 , you have to ask to speak to someone dealing with road tax to get transfered to the right person.
