I'm a Canadian living and working in Houston and loving the fact that I'm away from the snow and cold winters. I'm really starting to despise the traffic and corporate lifestyle of Houston and the Oil and gas industry. Within the next 5 years I will have had enough of this lifestyle and will be looking at downsizing my life. Here are a few questions I have:

1. US VI is technically American soil, what are the regulations for moving there with a Green card? I'm currently on a TN visa (Temporary work visa) been on it for 10 years. My company is starting the process for it.
2. If I were to retire there would it be the same regulations regarding visas?
3. My wife is into equestrian sport are there any equestrian centers she could get involved with?

If this information is available somewhere else it might be easier to just point me in the right direction. I've tried to look through all of the past posts here but there are quite a few.

Thank you

we are owned by the us , so i would assume that your green card requirements would be the same. someone like vicanuck can chime in here

there is the race track on stx and cruzian cowgirls does animal rescue including those of horses. there are also a few horse rental places where they take you on a tour.

probably not at all what she would be expecting

Your permanent resident alien status (Green Card) is valid in exactly the same way as it is on the mainland. No difference at all.

I used to be a professional horsewoman donkey's years ago (hunters and jumpers) but unfortunately there's nothing here to compare. On St Thomas there is the Golden Age Ranch where Jerry re-homes retired racehorses and offers some basic lessons and trail riding. If your wife is seriously into the sport and competition she could take some horsey time out at the Casa de Campo Equestrian Center in Puerto Rico which is a top-notch facility!

Hope that helps and good luck with all your research!

Vicanuck at your service!

The green card requirements/regulations are the same as in the US mainland. In our case, we bought an existing business on St. Croix and were able to immigrate on the basis of my wife's existing green card. I'm very surprised that you've been able to renew your TN that many times without pressure to move on to a green card.

I used an immigration attorney in Toronto and obtained a TN Visa as an professional in my field managing the business we bought. By the time I'd done three subsequent TN renewals, my wife had naturalized. As a naturalized American, she could automatically sponsor me as her husband and our two kids as dependents for our green cards.

However, I will say that TN Visas are not valid for work in the VI as the VI is not recognized as part of NAFTA. But, there is a work around that I can share if you're interested to know. I will admit to being harassed frequently by CBP when I was entering the US from Canada or leaving STX for the US mainland with my TN. But, since my docs were solid, they always relented.

Now, we're a dual passport family with the wife being a US citizen and me being a Canadian which is advantageous in several ways I won't go into here. One I will share is healthcare because as a Canadian, I can get an expat policy from a company like Cigna Global with family coverage whereas if we were both US citizens we'd have no access to individual insurance coverage because no companies offer coverage in the VI and ACA isn't in place here.

Regarding equestrian life, horses are commonly seen on STX we have an active Pony Club on the east end. I don't think we have anything like a dressage program but the annual donkey races come to mind and we have a racetrack. But one could easily start a program.

I'm happy to share whatever knowledge I have. Just PM me and we'll go from there. We have a small group of Canadian friends here on St. Croix and we get together frequently. I hope this helps.
