Internet Connections

Dear Islander Staff:

I was wondering what type of Internet connections are currently available? I trade stock from home and although using dial-up is possible to run my system, my cablemodem or DSL is preferable. I have been contemplating relocating to paradise since I can do what I do anywhere I can be connected to the Internet.

Thanks
Erol

Hello Erol,

We have dial-up access, wired DSL and wireless DSL. The connections are good down here but nothing like the states. I would recommend that you get 2 or 3 different companies for your internet connection. That way you are all most certain to have access. Trust me on this. You need more then one connection if you plan to get any work done. I use 2 dial-up accounts (MSN and VIpowernet) I also use the wireless DSL from Choice Communication. Dial-up is around $20.00 a month for each company. Wireless DSL is around $100.00 per month. You never know what is going to be working in the islands.

This may seem a little harsh but over the past few months the connections have been off and on so relying on one connection is bad news if you really need to have access.

You can also go to the Moving Guide, go to the top of this page and choose Moving Guide, then select Infrastructure -then go to Intenet if you want to read more about it.

The only reliable internet access in St.thomas is a T1line period. If you are a serious trader, you may on to join the local investment companies such as Galt Capital. We setup a T1 line for them. The T1 are very expensive because of backhaul charges.

Satellite (2-way) covers all the islands (you need to 'see' the southern sky):

Hi,

Thanks for your interest in StarBand. I have attached a pricing sheet for your convenience. After you have had a chance to look it over and if you have any questions please feel free to give me a call.

Your question is:

What part of the sky do I need to look at:
The southern sky.

Are there some Islands that cannot get access?
No.

How reliable is the connection?
The StarBand system as far as connection goes is very reliable.

Again, if you have any other questions please feel free to give me a call.

Thanks,
Jim Wills

What local providers offer T-1 connections in St Thomas? Do you know if they also offer T-1 connections in St John?
