Internet access questions?
1) are there public internet cafes on STX ? I really don't feel like dragging my laprtop with me this week.
Where, details, Thanks
2) could someone please summarize the high speed internet options available when one lives permenantly on STX ? I'm willing to forgo most of the luxuries of the modern world in the states; leave most of my belongings; sell my only 14 month old beautiful SUV.... but live without high speed internet access.....hmmm I think not....
If it's only available in some residentail areas, where are they? I won't bother to look elsewhere.
thanks in advance
Barbara
Hi, Barbara
Do a search on this board for "broadband" or "internet". You'll find the answer to your questions.
I'm sure there are internet cafes over there, but I'll defer to STX folks on that!
Wrt your question about "if it's only available in certain areas"...broadband is available in most areas of St. Croix.
Wireless broadband (terrestrial wireless) is line-of-sight based, and Ackley Communications covers both Christiansted and Frederiksted. Choice is available in St. Croix, you can get satellite over there too (but latency, upload and QoS are real sticking points with it), and DSL from Innovative (local phone co) is available there too. Ackley Communications is the only one that guarantees speeds and service (the others all offer 'up to', which could be anything from slower-than-a-modem to pretty darn fast).
That said, if you are in an area that happens to have no LOS, wireless isn't an option. Because the terrain here is so 'bumpy' (STX less so than STT, from what I know), it's hard to say "if you live in X, Y, or Z, you are definitely covered, but you wouldn't be covered at A, B, or C."
If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.
Best,
LR
Mailboxes, Etc has internet available. There's also an internet cafe in C-sted, but I can't remember the name of it. I have used both in the past and they seemed to be ok and not terribly pricey.

There's a cafe in Gallows Bay (Morning Glory, I think) that has wireless. You can sit outside at a table and be online. It was pretty inexpensive, something like $5 for the day (but don't quote me!) My husband also used the cafe in C-sted. It's not wireless and a bit more expensive.
Yeah.. there's a place right off the boardwalk in C'sted. Can't remember the name either, but the woman that runs it is really cool. $6 for 30 minutes.
Thanks Steve
I used that place last week and Maya the owner was very nice.
