Interesting STX Article
St. Croix is still a lousy, scary Caribbean vacation
There are other factors. Your average Cruzan, like most other people in the Caribbean, is exceedingly nice, law-abiding, very polite and usually well-informed and intelligent. These are the people I feel sorry for, who have to put up with high crime, government corruption, a worsening economy and bad roads.
But, too often you encounter rude and indifferent people in the tourism industry. Are you listening King Christian Hotel?
Crime is bad and getting worse.

Well there was some truth to the article, but my pet peeve with the article is...Cruzan is the rum...CRUCIAN is the people.
Not much of a review. Was he actually on STX? Did he play golf? I guess I don't understand the point of the article.
All I get from the article is that he stepped outside of the hotel to where the cab drivers waited and gossiped with them about problems in the area and that's all. It's a pretty poorly done article and it's unfortunate because bad press, especially poorly researched bad press, isn't what STX needs.
I clicked around the website a bit. I didn't find any golf course reviews, resort reviews, golf packages, etc., etc., anywhere near St. Croix, or for that matter, the VI. PR was represented. Sounded to me like the author had a chip on his shoulder about the VI's. Didn't he say he used to live in STT?
We should all need to add comments below the article, so that people who haven't figured out from reading will know that it's a BS article. It's not the first anti-St. Croix golf article either. There was one a couple years back that recommended you bring a bodyguard with you when you golf at Carambola or Buccaneer!
Maybe he didn't get a freebie or a big discount from the King Christian hotel when he said he'd be writing about STX. Notice he didn't say what his beef was with the place. He needs to get around more...
I guess I'M going to have to take my vacations off island!
While I don't like to hear people go off on StX.... honestly, he wasn't too far off the mark even if he did only quote cabbies. And there are so many better "travel golf" locations than StX, --and the guy IS blogging for a travel golf site which undoubtedly is aimed at a certain clientele. In Mexico, for example, they have some AMAZING courses and golf hotels with spectacular scenery. But you wouldn't go out at night there either.
Neil,
I went back and re-read the article. As you say, the guy is blogging for a golf travel site. He never mentioned golf. To find anything about golf in STX, you have to click on a link which takes you to a page with lots of golf destinations. Once you locate the Virgin Islands, you get taken to paid advertising. How do you think Carambola feels about that article? While they are supporting the site, he doesn't even mention their golf course, good or bad. It's a golf site. Let him rag on the golf courses, if he wants, but at least mention them.
Juanita's right.
I think this quote is an exaggeration:
“Seems like there’s a shooting every night, and even daytime,”
Dante
I agree with you Juanita.
It's poorly written, but the damage is still done.
And it highlights one of the problems StX has... which is guys like him can't see the good through the bad.
He's not going to talk about golfing at Carambola because he's warning people to stay away from the island.
Unfair? Probably. Untrue? Not entirely, especially if you know what those who travel to golf are used to.
I remember our first impression of StX...and it wasn't good.
We got past the negatives, but I would guess that many casual tourists don't.
Same problem with this message board. I'm sure at times it makes the VI Chamber of Commerce wince! 😮
People complain that this message board is too negative and in the very next post someone will say we gloss over the problems of life in the USVI. Either we can't win, or we're doning something right.
Linda J
For True, me tink you right on both counts. You're the Bomb and you Rock. LOL
Amen, Linda!

So true.
It's like that guy's article... incomplete.
Maybe everyone should sign their posts with a standard disclaimer. Here's mine:
"This post does not reflect my entire thinking about _________ and may have been written in haste or poor taste or both. Deal with it. If you want the varnished truth, rather than my lame myopic opinion, click an ad."
Perfect!
I grew up in a small town that's always getting fantastic reviews in various publications (best place to live, best place to raise children, best place to retire, etc.), and my parents, who still live there, HATE all of those articles because they're bringing more and more people to the town and making it grow too much, too quickly, and making the people who live there rather snobby. Seems like it's hard to find a happy medium between too much good press and too much bad press.
Those who take the time to get to know STX will figure it out for themselves. 🙂 I see articles like that one as maintaining STX as one of the best kept secrets of the Caribbean... I realize that some amount of tourism is great for the economy, but I think there's a point at which tourism becomes a bad thing. You don't want to lose the culture of the island and see it turn into nothing more than a cruise ship port and a caricature of what is once was.
(Insert disclaimer here. 🙂 )
