My wife and I would like to live on ST John for a year. We are middle-income people in the Continental US. We need a one-bedroom apartment. Nothing elaborate, but comfortable. We are 56 and 52. Very conservative. We like quiet and are not looking for the "high life". Where shoul we start?

Donny, Chip & Janice,
Start by ordering the Settler's Handbook. You can do that from the homepage here. While you're waiting for the book to arrive, read all there is to read about moving to the islands from the "moving here" section of this site. Also go back and read some of the older posts regarding moving here. When the Settler's Handbook arrives, memorize it. Even after having done all that, you will still have some specific questions. I can tell you from personal experience, there is no better place to get answers than right here. Good luck. We look forward to you coming to the USVI.

Hello,

Donny - you need to read the moving info on this site and figure out which island you are interested in. Also for employment information we need to know the field if you want feedback... employment situations are different depending on occupation.

Chip and Janice - Order the book Ric suggested so you can get prepared for the ins and outs of island living. Plan a pre-move/vacation during off season to St. John and do some networking with apartment owners - check some places out that might be on the market at that time or maybe will be vacant in the upcoming months. Figure out if you are shipping your car and items or just buying here and then selling them when you leave? After the trip figure out when you want to move and start doing the planning for that date, a few months before the trip contact the apartment folks you have met and see about vacancies. If not an option then plan on staying at an inn for a few days to a few weeks while you look for an apartment once on island.

Both of you - think of all the questions you might have and search this board and read what others have said and then ask the questions you have so that you are well informed and more prepared to make your move.
