Information Needed
Hey! My name is Matt Garvey and am 21 years old. I live in Boulder, CO and have been planning to go down to St. Thomas for sometime now. (About 3 years!) That is totally awesome how you got that job down at the Ritz. I am looking to go down there and get a similar job but I only wish I could be as lucky as you. I would love to have the job before moving down. As of now I look at spending a month in St. Thomas over the summer and trying to secure a job and apartment for around September 1 2006. Questions I have are the following:
How much money should I plan on having to move down there?
How could I find a job prior to living there?
Alot of places say you need permission to work in the Virgin Islands, what is that all about and how do I acheive that?
Where are the best places to live on island?
Is it absolutely necessary to have a car?
I own a small business marketing firm here, any need for marketing companies in the islands?
If anyone knows of jobs now, let me know, I would be highly interested in moving down asap!!
THank You
Look forward to your responses
BoulderMatt, these are all excellent questions - most answers can be found by going to https://www.vimovingcenter.com/ . I recommend you take a little time to use the VI Moving Center site as a reference point for FAQ. Consider also executing a "search" with keyword on this Message Board for even MORE answers to questions you probably haven't even thought of asking yet. Then come back here to post any other additional questions. Considering the Sept/2006 timeframe you've indicated, you've got plenty of time to do your research, pre-move visit, and and gain additional knowledge from the always helpful VI residents on this Message Board. Best wishes to you!
Hello,
If you are an American citizen you don't need any work visas or the like to work in the US Virgin Islands.
Do a budget for yourself to figure out how much money you will need to keep you a float for a few months. You can use the Cost of Living section on this site to figure out a $$ amount.
Finding a job prior to moving depends a lot on what type of job. Seasonal type work like waitering often requires being on island, in person to find work. Teachers, attorneys, cooks, nurses... often begin the interview/application process from away by phone, mail, e-mail, fax etc. You mentioned Ritz Carlton - they have an employment section posted on their website so you can review job openings and apply through their website.
Best places to live on island... there are favorable areas all around the island so its hard to answer this question.
Its not absolutely necessary to have a car if you live/work in the same area and that area is close to the bus route and things like grocery stores, banks etc. If you live on the West End or say on Mountain Top and work on the East End then yes you need a car. Having a car definately makes things (shopping, beach trips, chores...) easier.
I would suggest you order the Settlers Handbook and maybe the Life in the Left Lane books shown at the top of this page. You can click on them to learn more about the books and to order them. Read through the sections of this site also.
