Inernet Service
Can you get internet service through the cable TV service in St. Thomas? About how does it take the cable TV service hooked up?
Nope, no cable internet available that I am aware of. And, since there is only one cable company...
It'll take a week or two.
You can get DSL service through the phone company. $59 a month but they are running a special now for $49 a month.
It's not high-speed, but Surfvi.com is the cheapest dial-up: $13.96/mo. They also offer high-speed, with a guaranteed speed.
Which one is beter: vipowernet or surfvi?
so the phone company is the only one that offers dsl
or is it the same company that does DSL, Cable and Phone?
which it the cheapest and most reliable fastest service?
Hi, Ann,
You can do a search on this board for "internet" and find out all that you need to know (and more) about Internet service in the VI.
Here's the basics:
Dial-up
surfVI
VIPowernet (local phone co)
Choice
Pennswoods
High Speed
Ackley Communications
Choice
VIPowernet (again, local phone co- through copper lines)
Cheapest and fastest doesn't always go hand in hand 😉
If you want "cheapest" dial-up (with reliable service), surfVI (www.surfVI.com, 340-774-5780) is the cheapest, offers the most features, and imho is the most reliable.
Fastest service is broadband- and as Marty mentioned, Ackley Communcations (same folks as surfVI) offers guaranteed speeds and service- something the other broadband providers do not.
Best,
LR
One comment...not everyone can get wireless where they live, because of the terrain and tower placement. But we are patiently waiting!! 😉
(When are we going to get the smilies over here, Islander??)
Good point, East Ender!
The only broadband service on the islands (that I know of) that is NOT line of sight based is DSL through Innovative.
Pro is that you will probably be able to get service- con is that it goes over the copper here! 🙂
Innovative doesn't guarantee their speeds or their service, either- so it's a sort of "get what they give you" on any given day- which might be good (traditional "broadband speeds") or achingly slow (we had it, and some days, it was slower than a modem!!)
Be sure to give the other ISPs a call and see if they can service your area- they should be able to tell you after speaking with you or doing a quick survey of your area.
Best,
LR
