In need of 24 hours nursing....
Hello,
I will be moving to the Virgin Islands sometime in the next six to eight months. At this point, I do not know if I will be living on St Thomas or St Croix.
My daughter, aged 21, is in need of 24hr/7day nursing care (RN/LPN). Nothing difficult: trach care, medications, tube feeding. We will be accompanied by at least one nurse, but will be in need of 5 to 6 additional nurses to fill all positions.
I have seen previous posts from nurses on this board and was hoping one of them could provide me with info on how I might be able to get the nurses I need. I am able to pay what would be considered above average pay in the Virgin Islands ( $30-40/hr).
Any help would be appreciated...!
Thanks, NeedsNurses
I would call the Hospital on STX perhaps they have a devision for such services. Also contact the VI Univerisity they have a nursing program and perhaps job placement in place.
I hope you find what you need.
Iris
ou may even want to cal Massacs nursing institute. They have some great people there. Might be able to help you out. Check the yellow pages for the number. Sorry I lost it.
I'm going to play matchmaker here.
You also might want to look at the recent post from Connie about RN jobs. She is considering a move to the islands and is in need of a job. From her post, it sounds like she may be interested in having a single person to care for instead of working for one of the hospitals.
Wish you and your daughter nothing but the best for your move.

Seaview Home Health Care on St Thomas 775-1660, on St Croix 719-7921. ( I am assuming you mean available 24 hours, not on the premises.)
P.S. Are you sure that this is the place for you and your family?
Thanks to everyone that has replied so far........
East Ender,
From reading other posts on this board, it appears that I will be the only person moving to VI without a choice. I know this won't be the ideal situation for my daughter.
I will most likely be living in VI for a only year or so, and yes, I will need the nurses at my residence 24 hours a day. 3 eight hour shifts a day or 2 twelve hour shifts a day. Whatever works........
At this point, I am only trying to determine what might be available locally. I would rather hire VI locals than import from the mainland. The pay will be very good with bonuses possible.
You read my mind Hip Crip> I have applied with the VI licensure, but I took Sharon's advise and have been checking with some Travel Nurses- So Far none show an opening in the VI's, but I have been offered a job in Hawaii- Now I am really confused!! Anyway Needs Nurses, I just wanted to let you know if I do get to come, I would be interested in helping with your daughter- would need to visit more about specifics, but will do that when and if everything works out for me to come there- I don't want to leave you hanging- Good Luck!
Connie -- they do need nurses here. A lot of companies do not send nurses here at all or do not encourage it.. you can also call the hospital directly and speak with the nurse recruiter, Ms Cohen and she will give you a list of companies they deal with and ensure you that they always need nurses.. RLS is 340-776-8311. and the hospital, Juan F Luis in St criox is 340-778-7331. When are you planning on coming? Have you heard from the BON? Did you complete the application already?
Miranda
Hi Miranda,
I have spoken to RLS hospital and the lady there did say they were hiring Med-Surg nurses, and I have sent off for an application- I also spoke with the VI BON last week, and she is suppose to be sending me an application also with a list of all they need- I am waiting to get these. What I was saying, was I haven't found a Travel nurses company that had an opening for VI. I was hoping to get some help on the housing end of things, since the cost of living is more there than here in Denton, Tx.. Are you a nurse there? Do you like it where you work, if you are? I own my home here and was hoping to rent it before I moved, so I don't know how long before I can actually come there- I would love to be there by the first of the year. Any suggestions for housing?
connie, i am sending you an email
Hi,
I am an ICU RN moving to St. Thomas the first week of November, I will be living up by Limetree Beach. I am applying for my license in St. Thomas this week so if something should come up I can work. I am debating whether I want to work in the hospital or else where. If you are still in need of a nurse I am interested and I can mail/fax you my resume. I have 3 plus years experience in nursing.
Hope to hear back from you.
Thank you,
Tara
Hi Connie,
I have been in search for travel nursing to St.Thomas for a while and I dont think they are doing it anymore because what I heard the hospitals werent paying the nursing. This could just be a deterrant from the travel agencies to get the other positions filled. I just came back from the island to find housing and will be moving there in November. I am selling my condo here and use it for my rent for a while but I have waitressing and bartending jobs lined up already. I was told by a few people that have been living there for years that during peak season its easy to make enough money to survive and then some.
I also know people that know Sharon and another person Kim down there who are travel nurses. But I was not able to get in touch with them.
As for housing, I am signed on for a one year lease for a 2 bedroom house at Limetree beach, rent is really reasonable too. Two minute walk to the beach. The house is perfect. I have a seven year old son but I am still going to try to find a temporary/permanant roomate for any part of my lease.
If you should come across any info or if I hear something about travel email me.
Tara
Tara,
I am a travel RN in St Thomas, if you are interested I know of serveral ICU Travel RNs that are leaving in mid November. I think there is definitly availability, if you would take it as a traveler assignment you could collect the housing stipend instead of free housing.. anyway, if you are interested in chatting sometime just email me. I am with Abetta Care, I am oceanfront, good benefits, and the pay is on the lower scale, but I didn't come here for money. I have been here since Aug and am staying till just before Christmas.
Miranda
Tara, I will let you know if I hear anything else about travel nursing- So far I have put in my application with Nurses'RX and ABetta Care- neither have an opening in STT at the present. It was mentioned also to me that the hospital did not pay the travel company, so this may indeed be part of the reason for no travel openings at the present. If you want the information on these 2 companies, let me know. Good luck on your move- I am envious!!!- Maybe when you get there, you can let me know how it is. What type of nursing do you do? I did e-mail Mrs Cohen at RLS hospital and she told me to send my resume- they needed Medsurg nurses. Let me hear how it goes!
Miranda,
Do you think you will travel back to STT?
I am not sure. I have just extended my stay here. Coming back maybe a possibility. YOu know I think maybe why Monte said there isn't travel RN postings for medsurg is because of housing. My friends on the floors are leaving before the holidays and will need replaced plus they are already in bad need of RNs, when I extended my stay just yesterday, Todd my recruiter said it isn't a matter of does the hospital need you -- because they do need nurses everywhere, it is - will your apt be available.. He said it is almost impossible to find housing for nurses during tourist season. He said they have had to turn down contracts before because of no housing and it is not just this company -- bc they have the most contacts of all of them here.. Right now I am in a 2 bdrm 3 bath, i could easily have a roommate..
miranda
Hey Miranda,
I tried to email you a few times but it wont go through. My email address is tlh75@comcast.net.
Thanks,
Tara
Hello,
I'm a licensed LPN currently in Connecticut with plans to be moving to St. Croix in the very near future. I am employed now at a school for special needs children. I'm very interested in filling your nursing needs.
Thanks,
Heather
I am finishing up my nursing degree in May 2005. I will have my RN. I also have 30 years experience assisting in surgical procedures as a certified surgical technologist.
I recently lost my husband and am looking at the possibility of relocating on St. Croix.
I will be traveling to St. Croix in December 2004 to explore this option. Should you decide to relocate in the area I would be interested in speaking to you about the opportunity.
Best regards,
Joy McKee
