I'm finally here, Day 1-3 story
Hi Everyone!! Just wanted to share my first 3 days after moving to STX!!
Well i finally arrived on STX on Thursday afternoon!!
Day 1: The flight into San Juan was horrific... multiple "drops" , yunno where everyone lets out a collective scream. I was sweating bullets and most of the airplane was holding hands and/or rubbing rosary beads.. Crazy turbulence, it was awful! Oh well ....landed an hour late but i made it!!! My friend picked me up at the airport and then had to pick up 20+ boxes at my rental agency and in the pouring rain!! I had a blast!!! I was soaked to the bone but so happy to have majority of my boxes of stuff! My friend lent me his truck until i had mine all set to go. Wrote a check to the landlord, got my key and i was off to the house!! Walked in and wow what a mess and uhoh, why is there no power i wondered. Turns out the landlord actually "tried" to start the wapa account agin but didn't, DOH!! I was lucky enough that my downstairs neighbor threw me up an extension cord so i could use a fan and a couple lights! Cold showers Rock btw!! Another problem, i plugged in the A/C just to see if it would work...clang clang clang, whirrrrrrrrr and nothing.... it died!! HAHA. Then i walked into the master bedroom and inspected my sliding glass door. One of the sliding glass doors was missing and the other side had a permanently fixed piece of screen!! Must have been Murphy's Birthday or something because everything was going wrong!!!! The night ended with me taking a cold shower with no shower curtain under candle light, then i fell asleep to great thunder and lighting storm, it was truly surreal!
Day 2: I was very motivated to make Day 2 go well, i was up at the crack of dawn(the sun smacked me in the face) and was off to the races. Now to make a long story short, i got SOOO much done that i never thought possible on this island!! After all the horror stories about getting insurance, going to Bureau Motor Vehicle to get plates and a new lisc, getting the WAPA account turned on, you would think it would take me a week to get it all done. I was i and out with my registration, plates and a new lisc in 45 minutes on a Friday afternoon at 2pm!!! Go figure!!! WAPA was even more incredible. I went in and signed my name on the customer service form and sat down to what i thought would be an eternity. I was in and out in 20 minutes!!! Not more than 90 minutes later i had a WAPA employee here to turn on my power!!! Talk about lucked out!!!! Went outside to look at the meter and it was FLYING...the only things that were on was a fridge and the water heater. "Click" goes the breaker panel...who needs hot water anyway? LOL Oh i also managed to get a pretty good deal on a 12,000 BTU A/C from Cost-U-Less for $325. They were cheaper than K-Mart or Air-R-Us. After speaking to m landlord about how the house was not in "move-in" condition and threatening to start looking elsewhere, i had 2 crews at the house fixing and cleaning everything until 7pm! Great people! Turned on the water heater, took my first hot shower and went to Cases Place in Gallows Bay with some friends!! OMG what a great dinner. Had Chicken, mushroom, Jalapeno Alfredo dinner----oooooh it was tasty! I highly suggest it!
Day 3- Got more people here cleaning, and installing my A/C....the sun is out, the breeze is blowing and I'm enjoying being here so much. Now to start unpacking the 20+ boxes!
SO to all the folks who talk about the horror stories of WAPA, Motor Vehicle, getting your lisc etc etc, its not that bad if you know some friends to help you out and a dash of good luck comes your way!
--Now if i could only get the landlord to let me put solar panels on the house i would be in utopia--HAHA
Have a great day all
Cory K.
That's awesome. I can't wait to share my STT story. 35 more days...
We will be there for three weeks beginning the 22nd. Why don't we meet sometime for lunch or drinks.
Terry
Thanks for sharing your story. It's nice to hear that some things are easily fixed. 🙂 I hope everything continues to go well! Keep us posted.
I'm off to Roatan for a month soon, and I feel like I'm cheating because it's not STX! It's a stepping stone in my moving plan, though.
By the way, you guys might find this amusing... I'm working for a month on Roatan, and then for next year, I'm setting up a month on STX so I can get paid while I check it out over a longer period of time. I told my boss I want to kind of keep my STX month under wraps because I don't want my coworkers to start competing for jobs in my field, which are limited. His response was that he can't see any of them wanting to live there. Ha! They don't know what they're missing!
Lauren, good luck with your move!
Cory, you experienced the ups and downs of the island on your first two days! Its a good lesson when you are frustrated, for every bad day you'll have a good one where things start working in your favor (ok, maybe not everytime).
I actualy had a similar experience getting my Wapa turned on when I bought my house, 20 minutes at WAPA on a Friday and despite what they said, a connection was made on Sunday (SUNDAY...AMAZING). Registering a car can be bad or good depending on lines, but it isn't that bad usually. Getting a license, now that is the fun part.
Welcome to the island, where are you? The Case plase is excellent, my wife and I think their Nacho's are some of the best we've ever had (not just on island, anywhere).
Sean
Can't wait to tell you all my experiences in 73 days!!!
We do have our home already and have had wonderful experiences with WAPA helping us out with our tenats...just ask for MS Sicely Joseph and she will hook you up!!!
