Hey all!!
Well I have survived the long journey here. I left my home in Durango, Colorado, and drove 30 hours to Chicago a week ago. Left behind a truck, most of my wordly possesions and my dog at my brother's house for safekeeping and made the plane with 3 severly overweight body-bag sized duffels. (Only paid the $80 for extra bag!).
I already miss my dog, Maggie, I am dying to get her down here, my stepmom doesn't appreciate me dropping food on the floor and staring at it stupidly waiting for my pooch to lick it up!
Already been to Sopchoppy's (great burritos, pizza and bushwackers!), Magen's Bay (beautiful), Molly Malone's (great bloody mary, killer chicken fried steak), Market Marina (gonna miss stateside produce-good cheese/meat/fish counter, wine selection suprisingly good!), the Warehouse (pour your own drinks! My God I am in trouble!) and, of course, the Point Pleasant pool! Have read the Island Trader 6 times and everything else I can find. Everyone has been very friendly and to quote Orphan Annie "I think I'm gonna like it here!"
I know I have only been here about 30 hours, but I am loving it.
Anyone know where I can get a great club sandwich!?? Thets the only thing I need...
Oh and oysters, where are the oysters?
Thanks guys!!! LUV and SAND EVERYWHERE!!!----Amy

You have definately made some rounds, having only been on island 30 hours.... LOL. Glad to hear everything is going well so far - all the best on your upcoming island adventure. Look forward to reading your future post on how things are going.

Dear Amy
If you arn't careful St Croix food will bulge you out of your bikini. It did it for me. But I am being more moderate now. Great place to be....

Hey all! Me again after another 24 hrs.... new observations....

Did serious shopping at Market Marina... had staples and basics to get...$140 later I was okay with what I got for the price, was expecting a markup considering eggs come from FLA, beef from who knows...words of advice...learn how to butcher your own chicken. I am extremely lucky having some culinary training (meaning my boyfriend is a chef, LOL) but the price of a whole chicken is 1.49/lb vs. 5.59/lb for chicken breasts. Still, I made a list at home of my normal grocery list and I was able to fill it. I also did laundry while I shopped...then went to Kmart for toiletries (learned driving on the left on the way there). Things may seem behind the times here, but I was able to buy Lord of the Rings "Two Towers" (I am a LOR fanatic since 14 yrs old) and I thought it wasn't avail. nationwide till tomorrow!
Basically, as far as the minimal Island life I have lived, what you need is here, as long as you are willing to compromise on some things...and some time to allow for "Island time"...
LOL ..........Amy

Hi Amy,
I will be moving to the V. I. in September. I am going to ship my truck . I need to know where to stay till I get my Truck. I have been to St. croix , about a year ago. Which Island did U pick to stay on? Is there a place to stay in Christensted ?How much will it cost me to get a Taxi from the Airport?

Do U know of a good place to rent an appartment? How long have U been there? Every place has their undeseriable sections.I have a lot more questions , but they seem to escape me right now. Thanku ED.

I went to the V. I. Housing guide & found a place called the Villa Fairview. Is this a good safe place to rent for long tern . Do they have any problems , like sewer, that I have read about on the message board. Thanku ED

ED... are you moving to St. Croix or St. Thomas. Villa Fair view is on St. Thomas and is in Charlotte Amalie - no issues with this spot. Sure you could stay there for a couple months... if you are moving here for a year - 2 years maybe look for a more long term rental, as Villa Fairview is set up to be short term - a couple weeks or a couple months. St. Croix is the island with some sewer issues... not all the time and not at all locations- but is a problem.

Ed - I would suggest staying in a small hotel, inn or bred and breakfast while you look for an apartment on St. Croix.

Amy who posted the orignal post on this thread moved to St. Thomas.

Christiansted has a few hotels yes. It is $13 from airport to Christiansted one way.

Ed-

I am very sorry but I am brand new here myself, and afraid I am not too much help with logistics for you. As Islander tells everyone, buy the "Settlers Handbook", search the board for your topics, they have been asked and answered many, MANY times. Get an Island Trader with the book, do your research, make phone calls, send out resumes, and get on it. I am lucky enough to have my parents here, but they have only been here a couple months. I am looking for a place based on proximity to my new job, at least for now. Like finding a place to live anywhere, you have to be patient, stubborn and compromising.
For the last 3 months I have combed this board for answers to questions that popped up in my head, and almost always the answers are here already. Certain questions, like finding housing are difficult to get help with, cause that is something you have to do the legwork yourself, and see for yourself. The Island Trader is the best source for rental info on STT and is only avail. on island.
Bear in mind everyone wants first, last and deposit, so save your money.
Its all worth it to me, to lay on the beach and just relax, buts its hard work. Be prepared, and learn as much as you can.
GOOD LUCK!!! -Amy
