I got my VI drivers license!!!!
After three visits (the computer was down), we finally got our licenses this am.
Beautiful pic of Magen's, not-so-beautiful digital pic of me. Oh well, can't have it all.
Congradulations on finally getting your licenses. What was the process like? Did you already have licenses from somewhere else or did you have to go through the driving test and everything? I am moving to STT in mid October and I am wondering what the process was like for other people.
If I am mistaken please let me know but my understanding is that if you have a license from the states, all you have to do is go and pick up the application, pay the fee, go to an eye store and take a quick test and answer the quesions that are on the health part of the form and then pay that charge $20? After that it is just a matter of waiting in line and getting your new picture taken. I do have one additional question which is do they run your stateside license or do they just see that it is a real license and consficate it and then issue you a VI license? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated because I am a little concerned that if they run my stateside license then I may run into a little trouble with getting a VI license.
If anybody could shed a little light on wheter or not they run your stateside license, I would be very helpful in calming my nerves about what my chances are to getting a VI license.
Thanks Again,
Mike
(Mike: I also responded to your email sent to my address)
If you have an unexpired license, you only need to take the written portion. The rest of the process is as you outlined and also I outlined in a message below. They did not confiscate my old lic., but they did punch a hole in it. And no, they did not run a check of my driving record and/or status. Likewise for our insurance-- no driving record checks made.
Now whether or not they are supposed to I cannot tell you, I can only tell you my experience. And honestly, whether or not you pass the test is what you should be worried about! 🙂 Very weird indeed.
But everyone in the licensing dept. was very nice and helpful (much better than my registration experience). So feel free to ask any questions...that won't give you away.
Good luck!
Congratulations!!!
Onik'a makes a good point: READ and STUDY FOR the test. When you first sign up, they'll sell you a small booklet (it was yellow when I took my test). The test is much less a measurement of your understanding of safe driving rules, and much more a measurement of your understanding of Virgin Islands driving trivia, as written in the booklet. So you need to know the name of the road (the only road in the VI) on which it is permissible to drive 55mph. (Hint: it's not on St. Thomas). You'll need to know the permissible speed limits in town and outside of town -- even though those rules are contradicted by the signs posted on those roads, and even though they are never enforced. You'll need to be able to answer what to do if it's hard to see through your windshield.
I am not making this up. Study.
And good luck.
please help me--i am probably coming down to st croix this weekend to try to get a drivers license.
i would love to call you and get any info by phone that you may be willing to share. please email me@cowboysdad@juno.com

Thank you so much for the iformation. I also responded to your email Onika. I feel a lot more confident that I will not have a problem getting a license and I can not tell how much better that makes me feel about the move. Thanks again and I can not wait to arrive.
If anyone else has recently went through the process of getting a VI license, I would love any further information that you could give me in regards to their procedures and what the written test is like. My main concern is that they don't run my Michigan record and that all they will do is punch a hole in my Michigan license and I will be all set.
Hopefully I will have the same luck that Onika did with passing the written on my first try, but that is the least of my concerns. I will feel a great amount of relief when all they do is punch a hole in my license and hand it back to me. i will be that one guy jumping up and down outside the DMV. Thanks again.
